I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Most states don't require a license or certification to become a dog trainer, anyone can say they are a trainer. There are some professional training schools, but there are also many degree mills that will certify anyone for a few bucks. You really need to check out the credentials and references before hiring a dog trainer. Just because someone attends an accredited school, it also doesn't mean that they understand anything either!

| I agree that guy sounds like an old school big dog "trainer." I've trained dogs, I've worked with trainers, I'm comfortable running a training class. I commend you on being a great Yorkie mommy and trying to do what's best for your little ones. As far as your questions, you can definitely find all the answers you need on here. IF you can't find them by searching, just start a new thread on it. TRUST ME anything you are going through or will go through, people on here have been there and can help. While we are a group of strangers on a forum, there are also professional breeders, lawyers, doctors, stay at home moms, professional trainers, professional everything, so you can get great advice. We may not be YOUR vet, trainer, breeder, but we can offer help and advice for you to go to YOUR vet or breeder with. And it is a good idea to spend quality time with each girl separate from the other. I see no harm in letting them sleep together as long as they get along and you trust them, but yes they do need their alone mommy time. That's also a good time for training. Leave one in the crate, take one out, work on building basic foundation skills and teaching the manners you want them to know. Then do the same with the other. When they both have them down pat, you can work on reinforcing these ideas together. And I agree, Victoria Stilwell is a great positive trainer with some good methods. Most trainers use positive reinforcement these days anyway. Good luck! Last edited by ArmyWife313; 09-11-2009 at 12:14 PM. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I am glad you decided the trainer needed to go. I have 3 females, 4 until my pom passed away. They all get along fine. They have their little tiffs but they snuggle all the time together. I do take 2 sometimes with me or just one but they really like to be together. I think they will be fine together.

| OK I only read the OP post on this thread, but I got this far into it... "He said I needed one of those collars with the prongs so she could feel it when I tug on the leash" and stopped reading. I have less than zero respect for trainers like this. I'd say bye bye to that trainer. Love your two babies and take help from positive sources. Get the book "The Loved Dog" by Tamar Geller...it works and it is alot cheaper and you must never use a pronged collar poor poor doggies that trainer has... I am still trying to get the vision of a little Yorkie being pulled by a pronged collar out of my head... Ok going back to read the rests of the posts now..

| I have two UNspayed females - one of whom has just had a litter - and we are all living together in perfect harmony.

| I think you've already made the right decision about the so-called trainer but I did want to add one thing. Sixteen weeks is not a bad amount of time for a puppy to stay with their breeder. I got Sadie at 16 weeks and she was really well socialized from the other dogs at the breeder and from their family. I put her in puppy class and she has done great. My vet is impressed by how well socialized she is. They all have different personalities and she may be a little more shy and reserved but I doubt it's from her staying with her breeder. |

I actually did post on YT about Lily planting when she is being walked. The other stuff I thought it was better for someone to see my girls and home set up in person to give me advice. Guess not in this case tho LOL | |

| That guy is a nut case! I have a male and female and they argue like most couples. They get into some real loud and what looks like knock down drag out arguments but no one ever gets hurt and a few minutes later they are sleeping together on the couch.

| The trainer needs one of those collars with the prongs so he can feel it when YOU tug on the leash until he takes back what he told you and refunds your money! It is like someone with NO kids giving advice to people with kids....it just isnt the same unless your in the situation.......I bet you could save ALOT of money asking for advice here and if you dont get it then try again......I am sorry that he upset you for no reason because his advice was just wrong! ENJOY your girls!!!

| I have 3 yorkies. The first girl welcomed the second girl from day one and although there have been a few fights, about who can be closest to me,all goes well. The old girl welcomed the new boy this spring,no problem, but the second gave him a hard time for 3 weeks. They are now buddies, the girl sometimes correcting him like an older sister would.I think that they enjoy each others company and love to play together |

| I like to put the trainers "special collar" around his own neck- and drag him away from every dog on this planet! If he had a clue about training a dog- he would not use that type of coller- HE WOULD USE HIS SKILLS!
