| I guess I'm a "meanie" because I do not like for my neighbors to allow their dog to potty and/or poo in my yard....which they used to let her do both in our yard and then take her back home. It does burn the grass and causes brown spots. Even if it's the part of the yard that the city owns (between the sidewalk and street), I still think that is rude because it is part of the look of the rest of your lawn. My city doesn't take care of this part of the grass, even though it technically belongs to them.....my husband completely takes care of it, just like the rest of our yard. I just, personally, would not allow my dog to potty anywhere even close to someone's yard. |

| Hmm, very good points. I see both sides. I guess I never thought about it before until someone actually said something. It's hard to keep my hyper Yorkie off peoples lawns when I'm walking him though. I always feel bad for yanking at him. I walk him around the block before I go to work and I'm usually running late so I can't take him far. I guess I should try and wake up earlier to take him to more public areas. =_='' Hm, I also didn't know that urine was bad for lawns? I know someone that use to encourage their kid to pee in their backyard on the grass..

Thor's Human Donating Member | Ha! Well, SOME nitrogen is good for the lawn, but for people who are into their lawns, they are probably already providing the right nutrients. By the way, a "disciplined" walk can tire your dog out more because it requires both body and mind focus -- it might work out better for your dog and the lawn.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | A good walk is very important. Hopefully you're already walking him on a harness so if you have to give him a tug in the right direction its not going to hurt him and you don't have to feel bad. You should be walking the dog, not the other way around. Most trainers will tell you that a good walk, where the dog is actually walking and not zig zaging, sniffing all over, marking every tree is great for the mind and body.

| I keep all of mine in the fenced back yard only, because so many where I live (country road) let their dogs run loose and they do use my front yard as a toliet. I would not mind an occasional brown spot in the grass to contend with, but I do mind those mountains of poo that the huge dogs leave. Hit one of those with a lawn mower and you will stink up a two block area for the day! I also mind that disease is spread from urine as well as feces. Leptospirosis for instance, is caused by bacteria that are spread from urine of infected animals. One variety, Leptospira canicola, is mainly spread by dogs. There are others too. I can't know that all of the neighbor dogs are disease free. If I had my druthers, no other animals would be using my lawn -- then I would feel free to let my own on it all instead of making them stay in the back. But if I could just get part of my druthers it would be to keep the dung heaps out of my yard.

Thor's Human Donating Member | One funny little thing about Thor. One of the apartments we regularly walk by has a set of stairs leading to the entrance, and a bedraggled welcome mat at the bottom of them. There is something about the mat that says to Thor, "I command you to poop on me!" Every single time we pass by, he tries to squat on it.

| I don't let my two go in anyone's yard. I just feel like it's common courtesy more than anything else. We do have some people who allow theirs to use our "toilet" and I would definitely prefer that they not go there, but it happens. I too worry about any diseases that might be passed. The one that infuriates me more than a dog is my next door neighbor's cat. It wanders day and night, has knocked birds right off my feeders and eaten them (once in front of my grandkids) and has taken to using my bushes as his own personal litterbox. I've tried talking to them...their answer is that's just a cat's natural instinct. My natural instincts aren't very nice when it comes to their cat!!!

| Oh no....just leaving it right there for the world to share in. Of course he chooses an area right near my backdoor...which USED to be where I took my babies out to go. I guess I'm just getting old, but I really don't understand the total lack of consideration for another person. I confess I've had visions of scooping it all up and hurling it over to their yard. I know, childish, but sometimes it makes me smile!!!!

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Oh my gosh, this has been an ongoing issue with the tenants across from us. They rent from my father-in-law and our backyards are side by side.... Year after year, doesn't matter who's living there, really, but the neighbors walk their dog through their yard into my backyard to go to the bathroom....LOL!!! I'm not kidding!!! I've fought long and hard to get them pooping on their side...LOL!!! I just can't imagine, in my wildest dreams, walking my dogs into their backyard to poop!!! Now that is funny....well, maybe not funny but something....

Thor's Human Donating Member | I'm surprised about the cat, it should instinctively bury its waste. I don't have a cat, but I am one of those people who thinks cats are happier roaming around their neighborhood all day and then coming inside to sleep.

| I don't think I'd mind so much if they took him inside at night, but it's nothing for him to be out all over the neighborhood making all kinds of noise, which in turn gets every dog in the neighborhood upset. He has really become the cat that nobody else in the neighborhood likes, and it's truly not his fault. Bad owners in my book!
