| Another stupid owner So as I went home today on lunch to check in on my furbutts I saw one of the most irresponsible things a pet owner could do. There, on the second floor of my building was a dog on the balcony sticking his little head off the side barking at passer-bys. The dog was a pug. He was small enough to where if he wanted to, he could wiggle through the little space his head was protruding from!! The owner was yelling at him to stop barking, I could hear from inside the apartment. The weather here right now is really hot and humid. What in the hell is this woman thinking? Even if he was on a leash he could wiggle through and hang himself!! I live on the 2nd floor as well and my DH and I don't even let Marley or the new lil guy on the balcony with us! This lady is the same lady that offered to watch Marley while we were at work because her little 1 1/2 year old boy likes dogs! Yeah right lady in your dreams!! Sometimes I get soo angry with dumb people. It's hot, humid and your dog could hang himself. Do you not see the red flags?? Some say ingnorance is bliss. I sayits fatal!

| Puppys develop a sense of height at about 4 months. I have a second story deck that my dogs could jump off from, but they don't. I do not allow my puppies out on it, but do not worry about the older dogs. There is a better chance of them getting hurt jumping off from your sofa than ther is of them jumping off from a balcony. |

| The point is, they won't jump off the balcony, they will jump off the sofa. And puppies also don't tend to bark at people, that is the behavior of an adult dog. |

| I'm by no means trying to be rude, but if puppies don't bark at people then why does my 11 week old bark at people ( I had some visitors from upstairs in my building that wanted to see him) he also barks at me when I come to his cage to let him out. And my point that I was trying to make is you never know what could happen. I have seen so many accidents that could have been prevented but things were innocently overlooked. Who is to say that the dog would not jump? You don't know, I don't know. It is better to safe than sorry. I am sure alot of people would agree.

Dogs don't have a sense of what is there and what isn't. Proof in point; puppies will walk off the side of a pool deck. Each and every one of my dogs have done at least once. After that one time, they never do it again. But, all it takes is that one time. And I've had older dogs that have done it, if they've never been around a pool.

YT 1000 Club Member | I'm not so sure if they'd jump or not. If they see something worth going after they might just leap. We were at my brother's last fall visiting and he has one of those cat walks that overlooks the downstairs living room from upstairs. It's high due to the ceiling being vaulted. Roxie ran towards it barking because she could hear that her daddy came in. I of course was able to stop her because I was nervous about that thing anyway. She could have slipped right through those rails no problem. Maybe I'm just overly nervous but it's not worth the risk to me.

| To the OP, if it's ok with the owner of apts/condos, have you thought of putting plexi-glass around the balcony fence.

| I have thought about putting something up before but not since we bought a grill/smoker and keep it out there. The only time we are on the balcony is when we are cooking and that isn't safe ( she could get burned ) so we just keep our furbutts off the balcony

Thor's Human Donating Member | That's interesting. Thor usually won't even jump off my bed, or out of the car. He ran up some steps tonight and when I called him, he looked over the side because that was the most direct way back to me. It was maybe three feet down, with a dirt surface. He couldn't bring himself to jump; he ran back down the stairs. It was very cute.

| Humm , I live upstairs on the second floor .We have a balcony> My 16 month old yorkie is outside with me always on the balcony , never with any problems. She also never goes up or down the stairs, she's scared to . Even when she has seen me on the bottom floor, she does not ever want to jump or go down the stairs . I do not leash her either. I guess some would say i am a Bad owner, or just maybe my yorkie is trained not to do so, she is a good dog. I however, would never, and do not allow my 11 week old puppy out on the balcony. Suzi is well trained not to go anywhere, and always supervised.

| If my dogs head could fit through the railings on the deck, I would not allow it on the deck without being secured in some way. They do, will, and can jump from high places. My brothers doberman jumped off a balcony from a few floors up. Accidents happen! They could be startled, see something that gets their attention, or even slip or lose their footing. I know that I wouldn't take the chance.
