| I am beyond upset! We walk Reggie 9/10 of a mile loop through our neighborhood every evening. Down the street on the corner is a lady who has a 10 year old Yorkie named Ike. I recently met her while out walking Reggie. Tonight she came out and met us at the street to tell us about what happened to Ike. It seems that the neighbor up the street from her was out walking his pit bull and brought him over into her yard to "meet Ike". She was holding Ike and with no warning at all the pit bull attacked her and Ike trying to kill Ike. Poor little Ike has been in the hospital and almost died. She got to bring him home Sunday. She was showing us his wounds and his neck was nearly ripped completely open. He went into shock and she said she couldn't even feel his heart beat when she got him away from the pit bull and into the house. She rushed him to a vet who was open on Saturday morning. He has multiple stitches and for a while the vet was concerned about tissue death but says it is healing now and looks like it will be okay. Laura, Ike's owner, is covered in bruises on both he legs and arms and 2 of her knuckles are all bandaged up from being bitten by the pit bull. That was the hand that was holding Ike and her knuckles were all that kept this dog from biting completely through Ike's neck. The vet called animal control and reported the dog attack and they came out to get a report and retrieved the dog. Now get this.....the pit bull IS NOT current on his vaccinations! Not only that, but the wife came down the street later with her husband to see what the vet said about Ike and when the wife found out that her husband had brought the dog into Laura's yard to "meet Ike" she exclaimed that he should have known better than to do that since his pit bull had tried to kill her (the wife's) dog already before! Not only that, but her dog is a little long haired Chihuahua and I saw it running loose the other day and went to their house to tell them only to be told by them that they were "letting him run" some. I told them then and there that I would not be letting a little dog run loose like that in a neighborhood like ours with so much through traffic. Then they went and got him. At the time I did not know they had a pit bull in the back yard. OH and Laura said the guy had the nerve to say, "can't we work this out as neighbors and each pay half of the bills?" Can you believe that?! I told Laura I would so be suing this guy and nailing his butt to the wall. IMO that dog needs to be put down too! I am sorry if that offends anyone but any dog that is on a leash and attacks a human being holding a little dog does not sound safe enough to be in a neighborhood to me! We have people walking dogs all through our neighborhood and children playing all around too. What if that dog goes after a child? The whole time she was talking to us and holding Ike he didn't make a sound. He is usually quite hyper and yappy as these little guys can be but she said tonight he was just so loopy on pain meds that he had been very subdued. It just made me tear up to see his little neck all torn up like that and his legs shaved from IVs. I am so upset by this whole thing! I told Mark I want to call animal control and tell them that when this thing goes to court I hope that they are going to push not to let that man have that dog back. Mark said they probably won't talk to me about it but I am going to see what I can do anyway. |

| Some dogs should not be allowed out of their own property, theres a dog down the street from where I work that has attacked other dogs before but now the owner always keeps him restricted to his back yard, what is the point of having a dog like that. I would be suing them for every penny spent at vets.

| First of all, I am so unbelievably sorry this has happened in your neighborhood. I have heard similar stories to this, and everytime it makes my stomach turn over. Second of all, you are absolutely right that something needs to be done about that pit bull. Pit bulls are illegal in several states for a reason. I'm in no way saying that all pit bulls are vicious, but they are extremely tough and if you are going to own one, you have to take special precautions to ensure that they and all dogs around them are safe. There is a pit bull that lives in my apartment building. I hope that his owners take more precautions then those you know...

| wow what a story.. I agree the dog needs to be put down. The lady is lucky he didnt do more damage to her. Poor Ike he will probley never forget this... the owners of the pit bull should pay for everything, and I would call also animal control. And when the wife said he tried to attack her dog too.. well I hope she supports Laura. Keep us updated thanks..

| So sorry to hear about poor little Ike. People say that I am paranoid, I say you can never be too paranoid. I do not let any dogs near my two, unless they are also 4 pounds. Just last week a dog came after us while on our walk. I picked both of them up by the harness and set them on the roof of someones car. Thank god that car was there! Since then I carry a Gerber knife with me when we go out on our walks. Please tell your friend that our prayers are with her. |

| If the pittbull was not up on shots it may have to be put down anyway. I know my cousins little girl was bitten last summer and had to go through the entire rabies thing because the dog was not up on shots and they put the dog down for testing. Something about having to remove the head for it . Pittbulls in the wrong hands IMO are just like loaded guns.

| If he is worried about being such a good neighbor, then why in the world did he take his dog that he knew to be aggressive? That is just pitiful. I honestly think in cases like that criminal charges should be filed against the owner. It wasn't like it was some kind of random thing. He attacked other dogs before, so he knew it was a possibility. Some people are just too stupid to own dogs. Last edited by Sebastian Bach; 07-01-2009 at 09:11 PM. |

| I'm happy that the little yorkie is doing better! But why would that person even bring the vicious dog to meet another dog? Did they think "oh maybe he'll be nice today?" or what! The owner is obviously not responsible, they shouldn't own any dog if you ask me!

The 3 Musketeers Donating Member | I'm so happy to hear that Ike is better but he may not regain his zippiness due to the dog attack. When my sister's dog mauled my son 15 years ago and we found out that the dog's rabies was not up to date, Animal Control did come and take the dog and they put the dog down so they could check his brain for rabies. Apparently that's the only way to verify. I hope that your friend also called the police to report the attack. The neighbor should be stuck with the vet bills and her medical bills. I hope she went to her doctor.

| I believe that the procedure is to quarantine the animal for 10 days to see if it shows signs of rabies. But if the dog is deamed dangerous, then it will be PTS.

| Well here we go with another 8 pager that will go back and forth with how "wonderful" most pits are yada yada.....but suffice to say that THIS ONE is NOT wonderful (nor the one I wrote about who used to live next door to me). I wish them luck. I think this one needs to go.

EASY!! breath....it is bad situation and it touched you, but simmer down...don't get so upset. I am one of "those" people that think all dogs are wonderful. To bad the OWNERS are clueless on training the bully breeds. If the dog breed is too much for a person, then they should not have that breed of dog. I have a house full of dogs right now and am fostering another little we just got today. But guess what? I have no bully breeds, no working dogs. I know my limitations. To bad not everyone else does. You should be mad at the people and truly feel sorry for the dog, because yes, sometimes it is "easier" to PTS than re-train.

| That is awful! What if it were a child? Some people are stupid and shouldn't have pets. It is a shame that dog has owners who may now have cost it it's life! That poor little dog and your neighbor who went through this! My son was bitten twice by two different dogs, on different occasions who ran from their yards and bit. Thankfully the dog didn't completely turn on the lady also. I would definetally go after them for ALL bills!!! And some fines of some sort if possible. |
