How old is Hooks? Has he been neutered and is your female spayed? Hopefully this is just a phase he is going through.

My response is in blue:[QUOTE=Hooks_Yorkie;2685827]My questions were has anyone had this done and does it harm them physically other than our aesthetics. Some did respond, though perhaps there were not PHYSICALLY harmed other than not being able to bark anymore, the emotional harm was far worse. And hearing the pathetic little squeak was worse yet.

I tried the cans and spray bottle before I started the thread. I also rush ordered the citronelle tags and a vibrating spray tag and also the thing that you plug in and is suppose to deter them from barking. I simply haven't recieved them yet. These are just ways to scare and annoy them to stop, not correcting the problem in the first place, nor does it redirect the emotion they are trying to give you. Your pup could just be bored and want attention, simple as that. many trainers do not like citronella spray, it is very uncomfortable to say the least. I know you wouldn't want your dog to be uncomfortable. I would say these methods are more like anti-training IMO (not being positive reinforcement training, rather they are scare tactic training.) But hey, it has worked before! I will also try any of the new techniques mentioned in the thread. As I said originally, I was also looking into being able to completely stay off campus. I have to receive approval first.Hope everything works out for you.
Dogs don't bark for no reason. They bark to tell you something. There's someone at the door, there's a cat outside, I want to play, etc. Try to bond more with your dog and see what he is trying to tell you. The fact that he just recently started doing this shows he is trying to tell you something. Pay more attention to him and read his body language.

Also i want to add that I think many people were shocked that this would even be a consideration for you, that is why so many people posted in this thread, myself included. You would rehome over your dead body, most of us would debark over our dead bodies. We all care about you and your pups, that's why so many have responded. I hope you make the right decision. Best of luck to you and your pups.

I just wanted some input on whether or not someone has had it done and have they noted any physical harm. I haven't set the appointment or did anything of that nature. I was again trying to exhaust all the options and I didn't want to rush my decision.

I don't care what kind of activist you may be, but the first teaching of all those who believe they are "champions" for a cause is to learn a little tact and make sure that you listen and respect others while disagreeing with them. For adults to resort to ad hominem attacks instead of simply informing me of other options and expressing their disagreement is what is truly sad.

Debarking is an absolute last resort since rehoming is going to happen over my dead body. I will try the others (and new ones) until September when I have to move out. I was just trying to gather all the information that I possibly could to make the best decision. If you feel vindicated because you called me selfish and irresponsible than so be it. I will respect your opinion and hope that in any situation that you need some understanding and tact that you will meet individuals who show you more kindess and understanding that you never knew ws humanly possible.
I now know those two yorkies are in really good hands Good Luck.

Yes, dogs do bark for a reason. Mainly because they are like kids and they want to be heard. Mine are always barking when they are playing. They bark at me when it is treat time. They bark to let me know when my dh is pulling in the driveway. They bark when I am trying to talk on the phone. Sometimes puppies bark just because they discover they can. I do have one male that is 10 years old and he has only barked a couple of times his whole life. When he whats something he usually just whines. Don't ask me why, I know he can bark but he just does not like to.

The only yorkie I have ever been around that was debarked could still bark but it was a soft bark. I don't think it bothered him at all but since yorkies can't talk I don't really know.

I read that wrong, i thought she said she would not debark under any circumstance but she did not. Changed my mind completely about my last post.

He is 10 months old and already neutered. I got him neutered at 6 months when the vet said it was okay. He was fine for some reason up until June. Simone hasn't had her first heat yet and I wanted to wait until July when I can be at home all day and just watch her to make sure everything goes smoothly.

Nothing has changed between the. I bought new toys and extra bully sticks to see if that would deter him. I don't know if it is the new people, but they are moving out so maybe he will calm down. He seems perfectly happy he just seems to want to want to bark. It could be the echo from the empty house.

I was not in a rush to get him debarked. I just wanted all the information that I could before making a decision. We will just take it slow and see what happens. I never had to try more than one option when it came to him with potty training so I wanted to gather up all the info that I could and try it out.

Maybe it is to quiet in your house or apartment. I have a noisey window unit in our living room and that helps drowned out outside noises. I have noticed that my dogs bark more if it is to quiet in the house. I have fans running the year round.

WOW is all I can say. I'm really sorry to see so many negative responses in this thread. I am seriously against debarking, but that doesn't give anyone a right to attack this girl. I'm not saying that every negative thing someone posted was an attack - everyone's entitled to their opinion - but there are some truly hurtful things on here.

No, I don't think you should debark your dog. Especially considering he's more of an adult now and is used to his "voice." It would be the equivilent of someone taking away - or turning down - your voicebox. The sound of a debarked dog is like the sound of someone who has lost their voice.

I've got you in my prayers. I hope that you are able to find a place to live and that you can it doesnt' come down to debarking your dog - because there are definitely better ways to deal with barking. I don't doubt that you love your dogs, because if you didn't you wouldn't be trying to learn about the different options you have.

Hugs.

Wow, harsh much?

She's just asking for opinions, not to be completely bashed. I don't think she should de-bark him. But that was VERY rude. As a fellow college student, who DOES not enjoy partying, drinking or doing drugs.... I would much rather spend my time with my dog than go out and "party my ass off" as you say. Very rude and uncalled for comment.

The dogs sound like their in great hands, she cares about them obviously and is caring for them well.... give her some slack. She's just asking for information and opinions.

You are in college, give the dog a proper home and party your ass off and quit trying to destroy a puppy's voice just because you think of it as property that you're entitled to.

The idea of this makes me ill.
I think that was a pretty crude comment and not really warranted.

OP, continue to try everything that you can. I'm glad to see that you are looking at debarking as a very last option. I think some of the YT members have given you some idea of how unfair it would be. And perhaps you didn't think about those issues. Now after reading how some dogs react and how sad it can be, you'll decide it isn't the thing to do. I'm also happy to hear that your male is neutered.
It sounds like you will continue trying and I'm glad to see that. I truly think if you keep trying, you're going to find something that is going to work.
Good luck
