| Problems I thought Logan was housetrained, but we are still seeing a lot of accidents. Logan is 1 year 8 months old. He wants to go outside CONSTANTLY, which is one of the problems we are having. Yesterday we went for a long walk, and he peed and pooped along the way. We weren't in the house 10 minutes before he was scratching at the door to go out again. But he didn't do anything. But later I found fresh pee on the carpet! I'm worn out taking him outside all the time, and half the time he doesn't "go." The other problem is that he has started waking up between 3 and 3:30 a.m. to go outside. He was sleeping through the night for months, but now every night he wakes up and barks louder and louder until I take him out. He doesn't eat or drink water late, and he is taken outside to potty around 10 or 11 p.m. before we all go to bed. I don't get it. Does anyone else have this problem? HELP! I'm so tired. |

| Sorry. I wish I could help you but, alas I am having issues with my girl too. She is going to be 8 months old on the 12th. She does let me know when she has to go out but.......I take her out and there are times she just doesn't do anything. Then it's back in the house we go only to take her out a little while later. Another issue I am still having is that even though I take her out right before I go to bed, she messes in her crate during the night. She doesn't eat late either. She does not bark or whine to let me know she wants to go out during the night. She just goes in her crate. I would think at her age she should be able to hold it for at least 6 hours. I too have to watch that my little one doesn't run out the door. I have a lot of work to do with her yet! Sorry I couldn't help you with your little one. |

| Is he neutered? Sometimes they just want to go out and mark their territory. I've had mine occasionally go through periods where they have to go out in the night. Sometimes a little tummy upset can cause this. But if it is becoming a "habit" then you should try to stop it. Maybe he is lonely and just wants to see you again in the night. I tried "shushing" mine until I was sure they needed to go outside. Usually they gave up and went back to sleep. I sympathize. It's no fun to have to get up every night.

| Have you had him checked by the vet to make sure nothing physical, like a bladder infection, is causing this? Best to rule out any possible medical problems before trying a behavior change. Have you tried belly bands? At the very least, they will stop the pee from ruining your carpets and such.

Remind me again of what belly bands are. Do they cover adequately? | |

| Night time potty pads One of my Yorkies(RIP Buddy) had renal disease and for several years before he died, frequently had to potty during the night. He had been paper trained as a baby puppy and it didn't take much to remind him all about those pads to potty on. I was able to teach him to potty on the paper at night so I could sleep. I do have a fenced yard, so letting him out wasn't the problem;it was the interrupted sleep several times each night to do so. He was such a sweet thing; he knew how to bark at the sink if his water bowl ever got empty! And he learned to potty on the paper at night so he didn't have to wake mama. He still did fine with going potty outside and always preferred that in the day when I was home. He would use the pads when I was at work. He would soak those pads due to his kidney failure(he couldn't concentrate his urine and had to drink water at night. I sure do miss him, even with all his problems. Anyway, the pads aren't glamorous but may work for you. |

| You know my two Yorkies have never been fully housebroken. They go outside constantly yet just about everyday I find little "surprises" here and there. And when I ask "who did this" they both slink away, they know they've done wrong. No matter how much they go out, they still go inside. Thanks goodness it's "little" messes and not from a Golden Retriever. LOLOLOL I guess I will just have to love them as they are. |

| Oh my, you must be tired!! It seems his freedom must be restricted. Keep him blocked in the family room where he can be watched at all times. If he can't be watched, then he needs to be in a safe place (ex pen, crate, etc.) Only when he becomes successful in the family room can you expand his area. The idea is to catch him in the act and correct it. He's already learned that he can go behind your back - so all eyes on him or put him up. We taught Bailey to ring a service bell to go outside - and yes, she sometimes abuses the bell. Its okay to say "no" if you're certain that he is abusing his outside requests. I'd say once an hour is sufficient - otherwise he's just bored and wants to go outside. Wanting to go outside at 3 or 3:30 a.m.? Is he really going pee? If so, then I would continue to let him out. If not, then tell him to shhh and don't cave to his middle-of-the night tantrums (it might take more than shhh at first - use your "I'm not kidding" voice!). That said, its important to get up the same time each morning to let him out. We get up at 5:30 every day (weekends too) for consistency. Often Bailey is up at 4:30 or so and she just sits there and waits for us to get up. She used to wander on the bed and give us yorkie kisses to wake us up (sometimes she'd just put her nose to my nose and breathe on me until I woke up - LOL)- but we put a stop to that. Now she just sits there patiently and waits for the alarm. On the weekends, we get up, let her out, feed her and go back to bed within 10 minutes.... no prob. Good luck!!

You can buy belly bands on eBay for less than $10. Since my only boy came to me house trained and neutered, I've never had a need for them. But you should check the eBay ads...some of them have very informative write ups. You could also post a thread here asking YT members about their use/experiences. I don't think belly bands are a permanent solution...I think training is. But the bands will at least offer some protection to your home and furnishings while you are doing the training.
