Is he neutered? Sometimes they just want to go out and mark their territory.
I've had mine occasionally go through periods where they have to go out in the night. Sometimes a little tummy upset can cause this. But if it is becoming a "habit" then you should try to stop it. Maybe he is lonely and just wants to see you again in the night. I tried "shushing" mine until I was sure they needed to go outside. Usually they gave up and went back to sleep.
I sympathize. It's no fun to have to get up every night.
