| Yorkshire Terrier, true friend? You know how dogs are supposed to be people's best friends? And how a "true" dog should be always by your side and love you and miss you when you're gone. How they should "protect" you from strangers when you walk them outside... Well lately I've been starting to think that my lil boy cares only about himself and doesn't pay much attention at the people in the house I've been raised around dogs my whole life and Toby, our new family member is so different. He doesn't like to cuddle, he doesn't get excited when he sees us comming back home, and when we take him out of his crate he runs straight out and about without giving kisses etc. My bf made a comment that "If I am a piece of chicken he'll eat me" When I walk him outside and he sees people he'll run to them and be all happy. Not that I want him to be a mean dog but at least don't be all crazy and not even wanna move from and I have to pull him in order to keep walking. Usually a dog is supposed to bark at strangers and be a "guard" but in our case we're far away from that. I've also noticed that when he's on the couch with us he'll fall asleep like on the corner far away from us. He'll only sleep close when I am on the computer and hell be on the floor by my feet. Anyways, are all yorkies like that? I can list many dog breeds that my friends have and I've had like a Miniature Pincher and they are TRUE to their owners. My parents have a Miniature Pincher and she gets so excited when she sees them her heart is gonna almost explode from excitement. I am such a good mommy but my lil one is not so loving so I wanted to share this and ask if anyone's Yorkie like that? I was thinking that can be just his age since he is still a baby but I know puppies that are his age and don't do that. Thanks!!

Thor's Human Donating Member | Hmmm... Thor is definitely on the attached side. Sometimes we struggle when I pick him up for bed because he is so determined to get his belly rubbed. No matter how I go at him, he always manages to flip over on his back. When we go to bed, he usually starts at the foot of the bed and then works his way up to the small of my back during the night, usually just at the moment that I want to turn over. Sometimes he wants to sit so he's touching me, but at the moment, he's on the other side of the couch where his super-comfy bed is. It's definitely nice to know you're loved, but there are some benefits to what you have too. Thor's version of guarding is to go berserk any time someone gets near the passenger side window of the car. Examples would be: I've stopped to ask for directions, or need to get gas, or I'm at an intersection with pedestrians. He's very friendly with people, and I love it. He'll run up to greet just about anybody, and if they show him one iota of attention, forget it. He's theirs for life. I take him to work with me, and I have to stop by every single person's cubicle so he can say hi. He's also pretty chill if I leave him and come back, which I like, because I know he can take care of himself. It would be really nice if he weren't so touchy around other dogs. We're working on that. Anyways, maybe it's a case of greener grass on the other side of the fence?

| Piper is the most affectionate dog I ever owned. She follows you from room to room. If you sit down she wants to be in your lap (even in the bathroom). She goes from my lap to my shoulder and snuggles into my neck. She gives you so many kisses you can't breathe. When you come home even if you have been gone for only 5 minutes she nearly wiggles out of her skin she is sooooo excited to see you. I don't think she would be a protector she just loves everyone.

| Mahina isn't very cuddly at all. I'm on my laptop and she's at the foot of the bed sleeping. She doesn't snuggle at bed time. Sometimes she'll sit on my lap but most of the time no. She's been like that since before I got her. The breeder would send pictures and she was always away from her siblings sleeping on her own. She's very independent. She'll follow me around sometimes, but mostly she does her own thing. She does get REALLY excited when I come home though. Jumping up and down, running around, whining, giving kisses.

| We have 3 yorkie pups 2 are 16 wks. old and one is 14 wks. old. Daisy and Bo are very affectionate and follow me everywhere. I can't even go to the bathroom without them. Rosco on the other hand isn't the cuddly type. He doesn't give very many kisses but I know he loves us. He doesn't cuddle much either. If used to bother me but I come to realize he is just Rosco. |

| All dogs have their own temperments. Some are going to be more loving than others. However, was this pup purchased from a reputable breeder? Was the pup propperly socialized with it's littermates and mother? How old was he when you brought him home? Those are some basic questions that iwould ask yourself about? What were the living condtions where he came from? I think they are important. Because it will shape the little puppies future outcome. My Suzi is a sweetheart. She is loving, social, and love to give sweet kissess to everybody. Suzi is always by my side, sleeps on my bed, and is very happy and excited to see us all the time. Even if we just go outside to check the mail. i'll go take a bath and she will come in to say hi. She is funny, smart, and full of energy. Suzi is protective when she needs to be, and is very friendly to other people. when people see her, they want a Yorkie too. I am so happy I chose I bring her in my life.

| Thank you all for taking the time to read my Thread! I wanted to see how other yorkies are. I wish he was more affectionate but what can we do? Toby is Toby. He makes me happy and I hope when he grows up he'll become more affectionate and won't give himself to strangers like he does now. It just somehow got into me..I take care of him and he doesn't show any love back but what can we do? We'll leave to that "he's just a puppy" and see how he is when he grows up

| Don't think for a moment that Toby doesn't love you!!!!! Just because he gets excited over other people does NOT mean he doesn't love you!!! My Daizy was the VERY SAME WAY!!! She'd prefer to snuggle up on the top of the sofa...far away from me....She'd get so excited when she saw strangers..(she still does).... I would have to MAKE her give me a kiss!! (I STILL HAVE TO make her even now...but she gives them way more easily... when there is something she wants) She NEVER gave me kisses...so I started training her to give me kisses...because I NEEDED kisses to reasure myself she loved me...even tho now I am certain she ALWAYS did!!! So I'd make her give me kisses for treats...chewies..toys etc...I'd hold it close to my face...and say KISS...and finally she'd kiss me...and I'd give it to her...I could see she absolutely HATED doing it...lol but she would give in...now she kisses me alot....ONLY when she wants something...lol I really think that some yorkies are just not real big LOVERS!!!! Now she's older...15 months old....and we have brought home Tulip several months ago...Daizy has become a MAJOR snuggler...she will lay right beside me every chance she gets....and she even climbs into my lap!!! Which she NEVER EVER did before!! lol Oh she'd climb into my son's lap...he was the ONLY person she ever did that to....but now she's become more of a lap dog. So don't become depressed...and think he will ALWAYS be like that...he's young...and he has alot of things on his mind...lol As he gets older he may start laying closer to you...or he may not...but one thing you should never think...is that he doesn't LOVE you...Some just have different ways of showing it!!! Hugs!

| I think it all depends on their personality. Each dog is going to be different. My Couver is the most affectionate dog I have owned. When we get home, he acts as though its been months since he's seen us! He gives us kisses and squeels and is bursting with excitement. I have never seen a dog so excited to see his people come home. He also cuddles in bed with me when we go to sleep, and never wants to leave my side. I'm sure he will grow into himself and become more affectionate! He loves you!

| Our Zorro has need only two weeks for knowing he belongs to us. He loves us dearly and is always with us to give kisses and to snuggle. He is desperate when his beloved daddy leaves the house and took Zorro not with him. Our Rambo was very curios at the beginning. He wanted not to eat not to play and had us not noticed and was growling if Zorro wanted to be kind with him. I had to feed him because he was not eating by himself and he must thought his new mommy is a monster. Maybe he missed his mother and siblings so much. He was a sad and quiet little baby at the first time and that was really hearttouching. After 3 months he changed his personality slowly. He was more kind with us and Zorro, was able to eat by himself and was playing a bit. Now at the age of 21 months he is a little stinker with a devilish charme. He dominates Zorro (who is bigger) and manipulates us but in a very cute way. He loves to kiss and shows us his love. And he is sooo excited when we come home - then he is acting like a little chatterbox . Since last week he brings us his toys for playing . A few weeks ago believed Rambo that a friend of mine would attack me (it was only a little bit of nonsense between friends) and was trying to bite him. This is Rambos love to us. Rambo is a very tough boy and we are very proud of him. Both boys are very excited about strange people they see on our walkings but it doesn´t matter because they know that they belong to us. Both boys are different in their personality and they are the best companions to us. Last edited by zorrolinchen; 04-04-2009 at 03:35 PM. |

| That makes me sad!! I don't have my Yorkie yet but my Shih Tzu is like your dog. He gets excited when we come home but he is definitely not a snuggler. I have to force him to sit on my lap and he usually just jumps down. It makes me sad as I wanted a dog who would be attached to my hip. |

| To me, it just sounds like he is a confident little guy. I think you've just done a good job with him and he knows his role in the household and doesn't feel like he has to be everyone's protector. I think he'll get more affectionate as he gets older. When we first got Tobie he wasn't big on giving kisses but that is starting to change. He gets more and more affectionate everyday
