| New Mommy: Potty Training & Other Questions I just got my new baby Bailey home around 8 last night. I was a nervous wreck, but I think we survived the first night ok. I would love for her to sleep on the bed with me, but it's not exactly accident proof right now, so I decided the best thing would be to crate her. I know they say not to give them too much room, but I had her in a medium size petmate crate, which is pretty big. But it had her blanket on the bottom, a small pillow, a couple plush toys, and her food & water. She was in my bedroom where she could see me. She whined a lot after being locked in, but eventually gave up and went to sleep. I think she got more sleep than I did. I was constantly awake wondering if she had to go potty. I got up 3-4 times and took her to the bathroom where I had a puppy pad. Every time she went potty, all but once on the pad. A couple times I also hand fed her some dry food. Whenever I locked her back in she whined for a bit again but then stopped. Overall I thought it went well. Is this a good routine? One of my questions is how often should she have to go in the night right now? She is 10 weeks old and only 1 lb 1 oz. so I am free feeding her. I also give her a little wet food before bed and in the morning. At the breeder's house she never went outside. She was potty pad trained only. I want to outside train her. One problem with that is that my backyard is not done, it's just dirt. Today I have been taking her out to a potty pad in the dirt every hour or so, but she mostly just stands there, lays down on the pad, or tries to eat sticks. How do I get her used to going outside? She is confusing me with her potty breaks though. Although she has had a lot of success going on the pads, she has also gone on the carpet once (oops, my fault for not putting the gate back up), and on a blanket I bought her AND even the blanket the breeder sent with her mom's scent! I thought she would never go on the blanket. She was gates into the kitchen at the time with plenty of other places to go, including of course a potty pad. Also, she has been sleeping a lot. I'm sure it's mostly because yesterday was a tiring day of new experiences and she's worn out, but it does concern me a bit. She has also been trembling a little. I noticed the last time I saw her shaking it was right before she went potty (#2). Maybe she was just nervous about going in the wrong spot? Another totally random question: Is it safe to use Clorox wipes for accidents on the tile and cleaning other things she is in contact with? They say something about being dangerous to animals, but I would think that's if they actually lick the wipe or something like that. And I think my last question (for now)- I can tell she really misses her siblings and all the other dogs she had to play with. She sees my cat through the gate and whines to play with her, but the cat won't have any of it at this point. She's got lots of plushes and I plan to buy one of those microwavable ones and put a ticking clock by her crate. What else can I do to help her adjust to being an only baby? WOW I know this was LONG. I hope some of you wise yorkie owners can give me a little help.

| She hasn't been eating too much of her dry food. She doesn't seem to like to eat it out of the bowl. She'll occassionally eat pieces out of my hand or that I set on the floor or on her blanket. She loves the wet food and eats it up. She gets more playful and fiesty after eating it. Another question: She had 3 brothers at home before, plus mom, dad, and two other yorkies to play with. When she does get fiesty she chews and nips on my hands a lot. Is that just puppy behavior or should I stop it now? I do often pull my hands away and give her a toy instead, but she prefers my hands. ^_^ A second ago she was jumping on my trying to eat my hair.

| First few days Did the owners send home some food for your pup? Mine did and he just nibbled it. I went out for two hours and had him in a kennel with her blanket and toys and he got so stressed out I had to take him to the vets as she got dehydrated from excessive drooling. Wow I can't believe how he gobbeled or should I say attacked the wet food he gave me. We also gave him syringes full of water for a day and he was back to normal next day. From day one Zipper has slept next to me he like the heart beat and sleeps with his nose right under m chin. He goes out to potty at 11Pm and then I take him out at 6 Am. Not one accident at nights. The pea pads were crazy as he would pick them up and run with them shredding it after it was down for only a few minutes. I take Zipper out every 2-3 hours, carry him down the stairs and just wait until he does his business. I have a 17 year old Yorkie too so she has to go out more frequently now and shows Zipper what to do. I guess I am trained not Zipper but we rarely have any accidents. Zipper is 19 weeks. |

| Aww Zipper is so cute! So even at 10 weeks he could sleep from 11 to 6 with no potty breaks? The breeder didn't send home food but I had bought the same kinds she was using before I brought her home.

| Congradulations , bringing home your new Bailey She is very cute. Be sure she is eating enough food regulary. The shaking could be a sign that she needs more to eat. If she likes the wet food better, then for now, offer that to her. She is so young , and everything is new to her, let her have that . At least she will eat well, and because she is so tiny. the nipping, is puppy play. Offer her toys instead of your hands to chew on. Does she have little squeaky toys? my Suzi still loves her tiny squeaky toys . It takes a while to find out which toys your baby will like best . When she starts going through the teething stage Bailey will need Bully sticks for sure. Your doing the right thing for now , keeping her off your bed, mainly for safey reasons. Suzi could not jump on or off the bed when I first brought her home and I was so scared she was going to fall. Crate training is better for potty training, and it is good that she already is using the pad. Be patient with Bailey, and expect accidents. Reward her when she makes it, too. She just got home, and there is so much for her to get use to in her new home. Let her get use to everything. Don't stress her out. Use more then on potty pad, and place them where she is more likely to go .

| What treats would you use for potty training such a small dog? I have some Little Jacs and she seems to like them but they're a little too big. Lately I've just been verbally praising her for going on the pad because I don't usually have the treats ready. I need to get a treat pouch.

| IM a new mommy to my 1st yorkie too, okay have to tell you IM EXHAUSTED, its not different then when I had my 1st skin kid.. lol I must admit at first I was not good at crate training.. Im a failure , her little face breaks my heart, I cant let her sleep in my bed because it is very very high off the floor, and if she fell she would surely break something.. so for the first 3 weeks I slept on the couch with her... I understand all your concerns because I still feel the same way as you, I always wonder if she ate enough, slept enough, etc... I also use pee pads because a month ago when I got her it was freezing cold, snowy and raining, and I figured till the spring really hit us that Id let her use the pee pads. Actually someone told me its better to get them used to both if you have bad winters because often times its hard to get them outside when the snow is 12 inches taller then them... ( this eased my guilt ) I cant even begin to tell you how much I love her already , she is sooo precious and such a good little girl..Anytime I have a question I just come on here to a search or just ask a question , you will get some wonderful help!! Good luck with your new furbaby |

| We've done the new puppy thing twice in the last 6 months, first with Ella then with her Maltese brother Jack. I know that the first few nights with both, I was more stressed than they were. I would wake up two or three times during the night and take them to the pad. Jack curled up twice on the pad to go back to sleep so I stopped. The one time he needed to go in the middle of the night, he whined and I woke up and took him to the pad. Both of them slept through the night (11 or so until 6:30) almost immediately. Ella was never interested in her kibble, even the stuff we brought home from the breeder. I'd have to throw it on the ground and make it a game to be sure she ate enough. We switched her over to Nature's Variety raw medallions at about 4 months, and Jack at 3.5 months. They love it and eating is not a problem. Ella and Jack both love Vitakraft yogurt drops (sold at Petsmart and Petco). I break them up into smaller pieces usually because one drop is pretty big for a small puppy. They like them so much, they'll pretend to use their pad (Ella fake squats) to see if I'll buy it and give them a treat. Good luck, this place is a great resource. Can't wait to see pictures of your baby!

| Be consistant with training. Every 20 min for these little guys and give him a command. My command is hurry up. I keep repeating this while he goes then I give him a treat.Best of luck to you.... |
