| ![]() i think riley and madison know when we're going to leave. my bf and i give them treats and say bye when we leave and tell them to be good. they know when we're home because they hear the front door unlock then they wait by my bedroom door or by the gate i put up between the living room and the front hallway. if we're gone for more than 3 or 4 hours they start barking when we come in cus they know its us, other than that they only bark a little when they play. sometimes they'll bark if they hear the knocker on the front door and its quiet in the house.

| ![]() Suzi is aware that we are going to leave. She stands there and watches us get ready. Then she jumps on the couch and I give her lote of pets and tell her we are coming right back. We live in an upstairs apartment, and as we go to the car Suzi runs to the other couch and looks out the window watching us go. It breaks my heart to see her in the window. Sometimes I even turn to her and wave, saying bye Suzi. The other day i stood out on the balcony, and Suzi jumped on our kitchen chair, then saw me out the window. She barked her head off. Then I looked agin and she was on a different chair barking like a crazy girl. It was 6:30am. I was out watching my son leave for school. Suzi has never barked at me until then!

| ![]() We rescued a 3.5 year old 6 months ago and deal with this issue every day. It is an ongoing issue actually. Every trainer and book I have read says the more you make of it, the more they think your leaving is a bad thing. A new trainer we talked to today gave us another thing to try. She said to say your goodbyes at least 10 minutes before you leave then totally ignore them. Then when you get home to ignore again until they have settled themselves down. (even leaving the room and shutting the door so that you can't make any contact until calmness has occured) We will try that next week ![]() |

| ![]() I don't talk to Canyon the last 15 mins in the morning when I'm getting ready for work before I leave. I get everything ready, I pick him up and put him in his x-pen with his treat, toys, food, water, bed, give him a kiss on the head, grab my purse and walk out the front door without paying any attention to him. He doesn't make a sound. However, he must recognize the sound of my garage door as he is barking every day as I climb the stairs to our 2nd floor apt when I return at the end of the day. |

| ![]() Maci stays in the utility room while I am gone to work. She knows the routine and is ready for a nap. When she hears me tell Mac See ya later Buddy, be a good boy, she heads to her bed and waits for her good-bye snack, I tell her she you later, I'll be back and most of the time she is curled up looking at me like get on with it already, I'm sleepy!" ![]()

| ![]() Mine know when I'm preparing to leave - in the bathroom brushing my hair & maybe spraying a touch of hairspray - Bubba will jump up as soon as he hears the hairspray and go to the kitchen where they stay. But usually they are already there. I gate them in the kitchen where they have evrything they need & 2 beds - but they usually are together in one bed. I would leave them out, but my biggest fear is that Roxy might fall & hurt herself when she is crazily barking out the window at who knows what. When I'm leaving for work, I say "Good-bye, mom has to go to that 4-letter word place ![]() ![]() They just look at me with those sweet eyes that say we want you here mom!

You know, I have had Bonnie about 5 weeks. When she first got here, I was completely ignoring her when I had to leave, or when I got up in the middle of the night. I was afraid she would start barking, crying or develop some separation activity. I tried not to make eye contact. LOL But one night when I got up, I gave her a little head rub and a low "get back on your pillow" (she was contained in her area) and went back to bed. I didn't hear a peep from her. So now I will pet or speak to her in a very low keyed way/voice. | |
