We rescued a 3.5 year old 6 months ago and deal with this issue every day. It is an ongoing issue actually.
Every trainer and book I have read says the more you make of it, the more they think your leaving is a bad thing.
A new trainer we talked to today gave us another thing to try. She said to say your goodbyes at least 10 minutes before you leave then totally ignore them. Then when you get home to ignore again until they have settled themselves down. (even leaving the room and shutting the door so that you can't make any contact until calmness has occured)
We will try that next week
