But for some reason, some people think buying a dog is different

And the idea that it's okay to breed to "make your money back" is just sad. Most yorkie owners would be the first to tell you, "their yorkie is like their child"..........would anyone EVER expect to make their money back on their child?

Btw, no reputable breeder should sell with breeding rights, unless it's to another proven reputable breeder they trust and have maintained a relationship with.

And as far as the high price of yorkies? It's a simple matter of supply and demand. YT membership has gone from a handful to 41,000+ members in a matter of 5 years. That tells you how high the demand for yorkies has become in the past couple of years.

Sadly, because of that same demand and the perceived $$ to make, you now have everybody and their uncle breeding.

Being a byb and then to come on YT and complain about another person breeding would be laughable, except it is quite sad, as ultimately, the dogs are the one to pay the price.

Psssh, I do. I rent my 7yo out to the neighbors for cheap labor all the time. Make her earn her keep. I wouldn't have had a child if I didn't think that I could break even somehow. At 1.00/hr for raking leaves and shoveling snow, I figure she'll have paid off her debt to me sometime around the year 2053. I tried to explain to her that if she would simply stop eating every day and limit her showers to once per week, she could significantly cut down on the expenses I was owed, but then she changed the subject to address the hourly rental fee for her toys that I'd promised to renegotiate, so I kind of got sidetracked....

Without finding my one post, I think I said the maltese was supposedly 6 weeks when I got her. Actually, I refigured, and she was actually supposed to have been 1 day shy of 9 weeks, but, she didn't even have her teeth yet and couldn't even eat her food. I'm thinking she was more like 5-6 weeks. Just to clear that up
To OP, you're kind of like me, you take people for their word, unfortunately, a lot of people lie, and I'm sure she had every intention of breeding, which is really sad.

WOW, I didn't know you could do that. My 6 owe me a lot of money. However I plan to get it back, one way or another before I die.

I agree, my guess is she was 6 weeks or less. How horrible. Mine aren't even completely weaned by that age.

What about owner responsibility? I am so tired of breeders getting blamed for everything. It is not always in the best interest of the dog to have them neutered at a very young age and actually with male dogs, neutering them can cause more health problems than benefits. Pet owners should take responsibility to make sure their unaltered dogs do not get pregnant or get another dog pregnant.

Breeders need to be responsible in placing puppies in loving homes at a proper age and in many cases they should be sold with limited registration but to blame breeders for an accidental breeding that happened to a dog they sold is ridiculous. Some people act like it is a mortal sin for a pet owner to let their dog have puppies.

I feel that YT offers a wealth of information for breeders and pet owners but if we keep running off new members because they ask a question we think is silly or if they don't do things exactly like we think they should then what are we accomplishing? I see it over and over again and I think it is sad.

I def. feel like 6 weeks is way too early and I don't think we should be telling people it is..that is if we truly want to do what's best for the breed we love. Around 10 weeks at the least I think is the earliest I would let any go.

I agree with the part of how experienced someone is. Roxie is the first Yorkie and small dog I have ever had. I always had big dogs before. I got her at 9 weeks and it was pretty intimidating at first. Thank goodness my sister-in-law has 3 small dogs, was a vet tech and now working as a groomer. She helped me with alot of stuff even just by watching her with her own. Also finding YT has helped a ton, of course you don't have to take all the advise but there is such a big support system here. It didn't help that Roxie was very sick and had to be nursed to the picture of health she is today. She was so small when I got her and I was scared to do one thing wrong. Again I totally agree on experience esp. if the puppy is under 10 weeks or so.

That doesn't make her a "top" breeder, just one of the first few hits on a Google search. North Carolina is full of backyard breeders and puppymills.

wow everyone has pretty strong opinions...maybe she just wanted someone to talk to about it not be judged or told how wrong she is...sometimes im offended by the things some people say and the way they say it...a little niceness wouldnt hurt huh?...maybe we should start treating the fellow yorkietalkers like we do our yorkies (unless of course they are harming the little ones?)
