| Help!! Hello! I got my Yorkie 2 days ago and he will be 2 months old tomorrow. I heard crate training was the best so i have been doing that and usually he's okay sitting in the crate but sometimes he starts barking and whining. I was told that litter training would be good for him since it's way to cold to take him outside here (or is it? it's usually -20 to -30 Celsius) So i figured that since he is in the crate all night and he has little bladder control since he is still young, i'd leave the litter box in the crate with him. I read its good to make it very easy for the puppy to know where to go since he won't soil his own sleeping spot so i put blankets and toys on one side and the litter box on the other with no space in between. All day yesterday, he was very good and went pee in the litter box. He didn't want to poo and kept whining to get out. I realized after that he was whining because he wanted to go out and poo somewhere on the floor. I left him in the crate though and eventually he went poo in the litterbox. This made me happy as i thought he was quickly picking up. Now, if i let him outside to play with us and he needs to pee, he knows to go back to the crate (i THINK) because he always does but its like he doesn't realize that its not okay to pee where he sleeps since he is not currently there! Instead of going in the litter box, he pees on the blankets!! I put newspaper underneath the blankets and sometimes he'll push the blanket aside and pee/poo on the newspaper instead of just going in the litter box which is right beside him! I don't know why he is doing this. Any tips? Also it seems like he's only pooing once a day..maybe twice. He doesn't go shortly after he eats..like he'll eat a bit at a time during the day and he doesn't go to the washroom until waaay later. Is this normal? Thanks in advance!! I'd really appreciate any tips. |

| I litter trained my Kinsey. She wanted to pee on her blankets too so I took them out of her creat. It took her sometime to get it right but she did. Rome wasn't built in a day and your little baby is doing great! |

| You may need to try a couple of different methods before you find one that sticks. 30 degrees is too cold for your little one to go outside to do his business. Also, depending on how big your crate is. Most Yorkies won't do their thing in such close proximity to their food and comfort place. You may need to set up a sort of indoor run with an xpen or superyard xt to keep your little one safe with some room to move. You can set the crate in the pen and they can be trained to go in the crate to do their biz. Good Luck and congrats on your new Pup. ~Kathy

| I never did the crate thing, I always did the xpen, so much nicer and that way there is a pee pad down, water, food, bed, toys, etc, can't go wrong with one of those |

| I'd love to try out the xpen thing but unfortunately, we don't have enough room for it! Unless it would be on a carpeted area and i don't want to take my chances with that as it is a lot harder to clean if he has an accident. The crate seems to be working alright..just the only problem is when he goes to the washroom. I don't know how to make him realize that the blankets are where he sleeps and he should go in the litter box. I thought of taking it outside of the crate but then we'd have a problem at night time when he is left in the crate and may need to use the washroom and will have no where to go! Are there any methods to help him out a little bit? If he pees/poos on the blankets again, what should i do? So far, if he goes to the washroom in the wrong spot, i say "NO" in a stern voice and put him in the litter box right away and don't let him get out for about a minute or two. After that, i'll let him go back to playing. He doesn't really seem to care though when i say something to him in a stern voice. I've read that puppies get startled and usually stop what they are doing but he just thinks i'm playing with him and barks back at me. Last edited by FxE; 01-05-2009 at 08:33 PM. |

| A member on another forum has directions for making a puppy playpen with closet shelving with its own floor for use in carpeted areas. I've attached a picture. If you'd like the directions, just pm me for the link. |

| Welcome to YT! I wish I could help but I decided against crate training Scooter. He goes outside in the yard. Good luck and I am sure others will provide all the help you need with litterbox training.

| Thanks for all of the replies. I THOUGHT Nicco knew that he should go to the washroom in the crate and he was fine for the first two days but today he went pee right on the carpet! Even though the crate was wide open and he was literally standing right beside it (it was not even one step away!!!!) i love him and i feel so bad to say this but i am getting pretty frustrated. Not about the washroom thing because i know it takes time but i just want to make sure i'm doing it correctly. How long does it generally take for them to learn? I know it's different for each puppy but i just wanted to ask you guys in case. Also, one more thing. He sleeps in his crate at night but i don't think he likes it anymore! He doesn't mind it sometimes but he's constantly barking to get out. I'm afraid to let him out because i think he'll go to the washroom and mark his territory at yet another place on the floor. At night he sleeps well but EVERY night around 3am he wakes up and starts barking all night!!! Last night at 3:30am he woke up and was barking and whimpering for a long time! When my dad woke up for work at 5am, he was still at it and my dad let him out and he peed on the floor! I don't know what to do. He's my first puppy and i don't know if i'm doing anything right. I've been told to take him to obedience school since they are professionals but i've also been told that this isn't a good idea since the puppy learns to obey the person at the school and then has the same problems when he/she comes home. Thoughts? |

| we are currently training as well, and it is frustrating, but i let spike outside when he needs to go. i live in the north and he loves the snow!! i dont ever leave him out for very long and he does have a jacket to wear as well. (im assuming you mean 30 degrees farenheit) I have a long bell hanging on my door for my shepherd who rings it when he wants to go out, spike picked right up on that too! he knows if he rings the bell he gets to go out, if he goes out, he gets a treat, the last bit of the equation is that he needs to POTTY when hes out LOL (he does sometimes, but sometimes not, we're working on it!) Patience...patience...patience...

| I do the crate thing with my Jack, but he never goes pee or poo in it. He always goes outside. I mainly keep him in the crate while we're gone during the day so he can't chew and choke on something..(I have an 8 and 10 yr old.) Therefore there is always something he can get into. Any way, your baby will pick it up in no time. Just be patient.

Hey! I actually meant -30 Celsius. So i guess it is a little too cold for him. I don't know what to do. I'm so frustrated, it's making me want to cry. He did well his first few days and knew that if he needed to pee, to at LEAST go back into the crate. But now it's like he just pees where ever he wants! He peed on the floor 2 times today and once on the carpet! (All different spots too, he didn't even sniff around) It's like he knows he should go in the crate but he just doesn't want to. If anyone can give me step by step guidelines on how to train him, i'd really, REALLY, appreciate it! Also, what do you guys think of obedience school? Is it worth it and would they be able to potty train him???? ANY help is appreciated. | |

| Have you tried this?! I'm not sure if any of you have heard of this thing called "Wizdog" but this is what we used for potty training, it works really well...i believe you can get it in a few sizes....it kinda reminds me of those potty pads, but instead of buying expensive pads all the time all you have to buy is newspaper....check it out, this has helped us out alot....I think it was like $30.00 I tell all of my friends about it...it took our dog a few days to learn how to use it! |

| That sounds like a good idea! Would i be able to get it from PetSmart? And i just spray it on newspaper? The only problem would be that he chews up newspaper! I'm worried he might chew it up. :S The thing is, he poos inside the litterbox (ONLY when he is already in the crate) but he pees all over his blankets/bed or where ever he is at the moment! He's generally a good little guy but sometimes he'll randomly get really hyper and start barking non-stop! No matter what! It's not because he has to go to the washroom, it's because he wants to come out of the crate! Anytime i take him out, i make sure to wait until he stops barking and i do this motion with my hand and say "down" so he sits before i take him out. I'm hoping this won't make him think that the barking is the reason i take him out. But he gets too hyper and just runs out as fast as he can and starts biting everything! My hands, my clothes, my socks, everything! Sometimes it even hurts a little. I don't want him to get in the habit of this but when i say "NO!" it's like he just does it even more! If i'm holding him up, he'll try to twist his body so he can chew on my fingers. whenever i tell him to stop doing something in a stern voice, it's like he thinks its a game and just barks even louder or continues to do whatever he's doing. Help? |

YT Addict | Welcome! Where is Canada are you from? I live in the Calgary area and it gets pretty cold here as well. I got Lexi last year in February as 4 months old. I trained her to go outside to potty, she never seemed to mind the cold. She was never outside for very long. If she did pee in the house, I'd pick her up and tell her no - then I'd put her outside for a couple minutes. Seemed to work for me. I would go outside with her and when I saw her go I'd praise her. She would also get a little crazy, barking non stop running around, trying to nibble on my feet. For the barking I used a can full of pennies - I would shake it whenever she barked, unless it was to go outside. As for the nibbling she grew out of it fairly fast. I'd just give her a stern no. I've read that if you imitate a dog's yelp when you say no - it helps get the point across. If she got too barky, I'd put her in her kennel. She was already kennel trained so I found it effective, although since I heard people recommend not to put pups in a kennel as punishment. Maybe make a time out room instead? There are many methods to train, its all about finding the one that flows with you and your pup. Another thing, I noticed Lexi would get so excited when I came home from work - that's when the barking kicked in. In addition to the kennel & can o' pennies I would ignore her until she calmed down. Good Luck, I hope some of that helped |

| What is an xpen? I thought my little guy was doing well but I've been finding poo in corners. Guess someone's been missing him going. Today he's been taken out numerous times then came in and pee'd in the kitchen, yesterday he pee'd in the living room carpet. I thought he was doing so well but he backslid really badly today. What am I doing wrong? We watch him when he's inside and take him out when he goes to the door. He doesn't do anything in his crate, he does really well. He stays in there all night and his food/water & bed are in there and no accidents so far. I can't get him to use those puppy pads though, maybe because we started with going outside. However, it's been snowing and raining a lot and it's cold. I need some help. |
