Welcome! Where is Canada are you from? I live in the Calgary area and it gets pretty cold here as well. I got Lexi last year in February as 4 months old. I trained her to go outside to potty, she never seemed to mind the cold. She was never outside for very long. If she did pee in the house, I'd pick her up and tell her no - then I'd put her outside for a couple minutes. Seemed to work for me. I would go outside with her and when I saw her go I'd praise her.
She would also get a little crazy, barking non stop running around, trying to nibble on my feet. For the barking I used a can full of pennies - I would shake it whenever she barked, unless it was to go outside. As for the nibbling she grew out of it fairly fast. I'd just give her a stern no. I've read that if you imitate a dog's yelp when you say no - it helps get the point across.
If she got too barky, I'd put her in her kennel. She was already kennel trained so I found it effective, although since I heard people recommend not to put pups in a kennel as punishment. Maybe make a time out room instead?
There are many methods to train, its all about finding the one that flows with you and your pup.
Another thing, I noticed Lexi would get so excited when I came home from work - that's when the barking kicked in. In addition to the kennel & can o' pennies I would ignore her until she calmed down.
Good Luck, I hope some of that helped
