| ![]() My husband didn't want a "rat" dog...lol that's what he called them...until I brought Daizy home...and she won him over in literally hours!!!! We love her so much we just added our 2nd yorkie to the bunch! Each one is unique but most ALL yorkies think they are invincible...which we personally find endearing!!! My babies follow me everywhere...they can be very attatched to their owners... I think you may have read too much into the message boards!! There are FAR more healthy yorkies than there are sick ones. I haven't ever met anyone that owns a yorkie that has said they would NEVER do it again...most people end up adding more to their family!! lol Good luck with your decision!

| ![]() I've had a few different breeds of dogs in my life. I personally don't think yorkies and any harder to train than other small dogs. I have a 4 year old Bichon and Myah who will be 1 on Dec. 2. I trained them both the same way...outside and I got both of them in Feb. and winters in Wisconsin, aren't fun to train outside, but we didn't have any problems. Sure they both had accidents, but that was mostly our fault for not watching them. As far as needing pampering....they don't have to be, but both of mine are. Any dog I have would be pampered..it is just me. If it was a farm dog, maybe not, but these two are part of the family. I've spoiled all my girls....skin and fur. You said you have a pap....so you shouldn't have any problems with a yorkie. Plus, the yorkie will be "trained" by the other dogs, so you should have potty training problems. Good luck with your decision...remember, you get what you pay for. Can't wait to see photos!!!!!! |

| ![]() "Thank God I Found This Thread"!! I have been browsing this site for two hours now reading about everyone's problems and it was really getting to me. Even though I told my wife exactly what was posted earlier (this is a forum for people to solve their "problems") I was still second guessing our downpayment made "just yesterday" for a YT puppy. We go back to pick him up on December 20th as an early Christmas present for our 7-year old son.(We have a 4-year old daughter as well) Devon (our son) has wanted a puppy for two years now and after a previously bad experience with our first puppy (a Maltese) my wife and I swore we would never get another dog. He is such a loving kid and really likes dogs, so we finally broke down and said he could get one on his 9th birthday. Now we're surprising him this year on Christmas. Puppies are "irresistable", aren't they! Don't worry, as responsible and loving as our son is, my wife and I fully expect to do a good part of the "raising" of this puppy. Although our son has already read three chapters of the "Yorkshire Terrier Animal Planet" book that we purchased last night for him. Thanks for all the positive feedback in this thread. We know several people that have had or still have Yorkies, and they adore them, but after reading a majority of the other "problem" threads, I was getting a little nervous just like the person that started this discussion. We'll be in touch again soon I'm sure. I'll keep reading and learning. Trying to figure out how we're going to set up his sleeping and play area with the layout of our house. Decisions, Decisions! |

| ![]() I wasn't looking for a Yorkie when I got my Izze. I was/am a poodle person who would NEVER consider getting a terrier. I was pleasantly suprised! Izze is such a gift---she's smart, funny, stubborn---she has such a 'tude. She is just like my poodles and I love her dearly. You couldn't ask for a better dog.

| ![]() any health problems with Allie Bear. She is very healthy and happy. In fact, the only problem I do have, is not having another one LOL!!!! When I started looking for a dog, I wasn't sold on Yorkies either. Really just because of the "yap" factor but I couldn't have been more wrong. This is a wonderful breed. If Allie Bear would've been my first dog, the other two would be Yorkies, well one of the other two. I love my Japanese Chin. But, Allie Bear has been here about three weeks now and I just love her. I have found that I can no longer live without Allie snuggling under the blankets next to me at night. All dogs, no matter the breed, will have its problems. They all have their own personalities. But Yorkies are a great breed, truly. |

| ![]() I am 45 yrs. old and I grew up w/Dogs all my Life, I have had every Breed from a Pitbull to a Newfoundland and everything in between. I have 3 Yorkie's Artie 10 lbs./4 yrs. old, Abigail 8 lbs./3 yrs. old and Pom Pom their daughter 5 lbs./2 yrs. old. I am a true Yorkie Fan, of all the Dogs I have ever had my 3 are by far the most Impressive. I have such an incredible bond/connection with all 3 of them whether they are by themselves or all together as a Pack or in their case as a Family. They are very smart and learn things quickly! They respond to voice and sound commands as well as hand signals. They understand English, Filipino and Japanese (Since I'm from Hawaii). They were all House Trained within a day or 2. They are all Healthy, except for an annoying honking/snorting cough from Artie when he gets excited. I do NOT recommend this Breed for small children, I have Trained/Socialized mine to accept children of all ages but I can tell they are uncomfortable, except for Abigail, she was bred by a Woman who was a Grand Mother of 5, so she was around that kind of comotion/energy all the time from birth which is rare for this Breed. I do not recommend this Breed for first time Dog Owners that have never had or raised a Dog before, only b/c Yorkies usually figure out at an early age how much they can get away with and usually manipulate their Humans. The reasons I am so Happy and proud of mine are endless. Poor Health is a sign of Poor Breeding, unfortunately you DON"T get what you pay for, regardless of the price it's NOT a Garauntee of Quality! It's so sad to me that this is such a popular Breed that they are being over-bred w/NO "Quality Control" everybody wants to Breed their own to make a buck or save a buck? Bottom line is you must make the effort to Train and Socialize them just like any other Breed of Dog. I enjoy every moment w/mine b/c I know that I am Lucky enough to have them! For the record I have about 10 friends, 1 Sister and 3 Cousins that have Yorkie's and they all complain about the same problems and always ask for my advice since mine are so well behaved and actually Trained. So if you have had previous experience Training Dogs of any Breed you should'nt have any problems? My 3 know exactly what I want and what I expect of them. Do your Research, read as much as you can about them so you won't be surprised and you will know what to expect. I personally ignored every negative thing I ever heard about them, I would tell myself "Not mine" and I would purposely try to prove them wrong. I would also see my Friend's Yorkie's act like Fool's @ my House while I was Dog Sitting or while I was @ their's and after about 5 min. around my 3 they all laid down and fell asleep. Good Luck to everyone that reads this it's a hard decision b/c it is a long term committment, but by all means recognize and admit your limitations. Yorkie's are NOT for everyone but I did notice you either Love them or Hate them with all your Heart! ![]()

| ![]() Like many others who have already commented, I wouldn't trade my Toby for anything. He is always happy, and shares that with everyone around him. He does have a grade 2 luxating patella, so we got stairs for him to use and he has no problems now. He has a few allergies and does the honking/snorting thing at times, so we have a portable air cleaner, and those episodes are far and few between. We just added Rudy to our family, a 10 week old yorkie, and Toby is actually helping out with the housebreaking...yay! They are not for everyone, they can be stubborn at times .... but with patience and persistence they can turn into the best fur companions you will ever have ![]()

| ![]() I think any dog has it's good and bad points and any breed can have health problems, but you shouldn't need someone to talk you into getting a certain breed. I have two, an 8 year old male and a 7 month old female. They are quite different from one another. With my male I have problems with him "knowing his place", he does try to snap in certain situations, and he has allergies, he was also fairly easy to potty train though he will potty on the carpet when I leave. His behavior is bad because of how he grew up, my parents would undo everything I would try to do with him, (I got him when I was pretty young, so my parents were a problem I had to deal with when it came to training him) and his allergies are under control with the right coat care and better food (and making sure no table scraps are given to him!). My female is horrible with potty training, but so far she listens very well, she's a ball of energy and is quite stubborn when it comes to grooming, she's a loveable little doll and so far *knock on wood* I haven't had any health problems come up. Even with their faults I adore my babies, they have very different and great personalities, they crack me up every day, they are high maintenence for me but I love it. And you don't have to "pamper" them, if you are meaning like how a lot of us dress them up and things like that, they can be demanding for attention but I don't see how that would interfere with your other dogs.

| ![]() What do all of you use for the puppies beds and crates and pens? We want the pup to sleep in our room, and we would like to provide a place for him to "go" throughout the night. We would like to keep him in the laundry room in a pen during the times we are away from the house for extended periods of time. And then we want something in the living room area for the times when we he's resting and between play times. Of course, without breaking the bank, how do all of you manage all of this? My idea was to have a crate for transport and resting in the living room area during the day. And that crate could be attached to a small pen with pee pads and a small play area in the laundry room while we're away. It could also be hooked to a pen with a pee pad in our bedroom at night. Not sure how i'm going to pull this off, but I can typically figure something out. Just not sure what the best and easiest method is for dealing with all of this?? Any suggestions? |
