We go back to pick him up on December 20th as an early Christmas present for our 7-year old son.(We have a 4-year old daughter as well) Devon (our son) has wanted a puppy for two years now and after a previously bad experience with our first puppy (a Maltese) my wife and I swore we would never get another dog. He is such a loving kid and really likes dogs, so we finally broke down and said he could get one on his 9th birthday. Now we're surprising him this year on Christmas. Puppies are "irresistable", aren't they! Don't worry, as responsible and loving as our son is, my wife and I fully expect to do a good part of the "raising" of this puppy. Although our son has already read three chapters of the "Yorkshire Terrier Animal Planet" book that we purchased last night for him.
Thanks for all the positive feedback in this thread. We know several people that have had or still have Yorkies, and they adore them, but after reading a majority of the other "problem" threads, I was getting a little nervous just like the person that started this discussion. We'll be in touch again soon I'm sure. I'll keep reading and learning. Trying to figure out how we're going to set up his sleeping and play area with the layout of our house. Decisions, Decisions! |
Aww! I have a feeling you will do just great. While I don't have kids yet, Sammy came to us at 10 months old from a family with kids and she still loves kids and runs after them on walks and rolls over for them to pet her. If they ignore her she barks at them for not petting her! Ha! She is the most well adjusted dog ever. She loves everyone and follows us around just curious what we are doing. She is like the perfect dog for a little kid to meet for the first time and have a good experience with. Anyway, as long as you have respectful kids you'll be fine. Thank you for letting your kids have a dog. I wanted one my whole life and begged and begged for a Yorkie and my parents always said I wouldn't take care of it - well I have two of the most well cared for pups around and it would have been the same at 15 or 10 or 7

Good luck and enjoy! They grow up too fast!
