| i would suggest that unless you are prepared to lose your baby, that she not be bred. Also you should not breed unless you have researched her line, the males line and are well educated in breeding, caring for mama and the babies. There is a lot more to it than what people realize. |

| Who are the people suggesting that you breed her?? People that want a puppy?? I would not breed my baby for anything!! It's dangerous...especially for someone that doesn't have any knowledge of breeding...plus it can and will change your little baby....if she doesn't have complications during pregnancy...or delivery of the pups.... If you simply wanted a pet...you should protect her by getting her spayed. It's the best for her as well!!

| Hi! I absolutely agree with Sugar Mom. So I think its best not to breed unless you have done all that was stated in the OP post. Wishing you all the best.

Nothing against you but I always wonder why most breeders say this. I mean I know there is a big chance one can lose the mother . But when I see a breeders type this answer to the question above .]i would suggest that unless you are prepared to lose your baby, that she not be bred. Isent that what you breeders are doing when you breed your females? taking the same chance at losing your females? so why is it ok for you to breed and take the chance? I just dont get this answer coming from someone who does breed. Again dee Im not trying to point fingers or start trouble, I just really dont under stand this. I say read every thing you can and have all the test done on her an dthe male you plan to breed her with before deciding to breed her. Ask your vet what he/she thinks. If she was mine I wouldnt breed her , just keep her as a loving pet.

| The idea of breeding them once before spaying is an old myth. If you want to keep her as playful and young hearted as possible, then I would suggest not breeding her. In fact she should have been spayed before her first heat. Once they have had a litter and have nursed puppies their nibbles are developed and more prominant. And their vulva is more developed and prominant. So unless you have researched and know what all is involved in breeding it's really better to just spay her and keep your little girl a little girl. |

To answer your rquestion, breeding is not something to be taken lightly. You had better know what you are getting into and the risks involved. Most people that ask the question to breed or not to breed, are not wanting to put a lot of effort into research, they just think it would be fun to have a litter of puppies, and they are not prepared for the risks complications. So for someone to bring up the questions, are you prepared to lose your dog? Have you thought about the risks? Could you forgive yourself if something happened? is not out of line. The person asked for advice and she got it. Most people do not realize that losing them is even and issue. Last edited by JeanieK; 11-08-2008 at 03:08 PM.

But what I was saying it sounds odd for a breeder to just say i would suggest that unless you are prepared to lose your baby, that she not be bred. when they see that you too are doing it and taking the same chance with your females. even the best of breeders can lose their female. complicatons can arise any time with even a good breeder. Im not saying dont say it. yes they do need to know it. its not out of line in saying it either. Im just saying it sounds odd coming from a breeder that is breeding a female with out going into more detail.

| I knew a yorkie breeder that used to post quite often on a yorkie site I was on. Her dog had had 3 litters of pups, with no problems. Well, last time, something went wrong and she lost the mother(which was this ladys "baby") she was devastated, and never did post again after that..with me, I love mine too much to take that chance, that's why they're spayed asap. |

| I would not consider breeding because personally I know nothing about it. I am under the impression that if you are going to spay your dog that it be done BEFORE the first heat to obtain the optimum health benefits that come with spaying. |

| You are right to worry about her having puppies. Toy breed dogs are at a much higher risk for complications and c-sections are pretty common. There is no reason to take that risk with her. Did you know that if you had spayed her before she ever had her first heat she would never get mammary cancer? If you spay her now, before she has her second heat, her risk of cancer will only be 8%. If you wait until after she has that second heat, her risk of getting mammary cancer when she gets older jumps to 25%. |

| Great posts Dee! I agree 100%. Also, I might add, is that the OP needs to think about what she is producing. If the stud and bitch have not been evaluated by experienced breeders/exhibitors/judges then only pet quality or Yorkies not meeting the YTCA standard will be produced. There are waaaaaaaaaay to many of these poor quality Yorkies as well as most other "popular" breeds being produced. I say breed for the right reasons.
