| house training problems Hi, I hope someone out there can give me some guidance. I have a 6 month old Yorkie male. His potty training seems to go great during the day. I take him out every 30 minutes or so, or if he gives me the "look" It's the evening that is the problem. He seems to forget all about training after 6PM. He just squats wherever with no warning. I get so frustrated because I know he can do it when he wants to. Any advice? |

| training problems I tried crate training but he makes so much noise that I couldn't deal with it. He basically has the run of the house under my supervision. Unfortunately I can't catch him all the time. Do I need to start all over? |

| I thought that I knew better and kept my 4 month old (now 6 months) free roam in the kitchen with a pee pad during the day. He was about 50/50 - and I took him out every couple hours. He was fine overnight and rarely ever peed or pooped on the pads. I was getting frustrated because I seemed to be unable to (no matter how much I stuck to 'my' schedule) be able to make him get it and tell me when he needed to go outside. He seemed to be on his schedule only and I wasn't privy to the details of it. I admitted to myself that I had a problem and decided to start crate training. I'm not in control as the pack leader if he's dictating the schedule. That will change. lol But I do regret not crate training him from the beginning. Good luck with your furbaby! You'll get it sorted out.

| If I'm not in the same room that I have him crated in, he gets stressed and starts to cry, so since my carrier is so small, I cart him around the house with me so he can see me and it's like we're hanging out. He seems to be just fine and naps most of the time. He has toys and I give him a little treat when he's being good in his carrier. As I said, he gets stressed when he's not with me, so I try to make sure that he can see me all the time! Hope that helps.

| How can I get him to accept the crate? He sleeps in a crate with door open in gated laundry room at night. If I close him in there will be no peace in this house. My husband won't tolerate the noise when he gets home from work in the evening. My puppy howls. barks, and shakes. I've tried having the crate right next to me, I've tried it in another room but he just barks and howls the whole time. |

| Well when I had him in the kitchen all the time with his pee pads, I had the crate sitting on the floor with his toys and stuff in it (with the door off since I never closed it). He would sleep in there anyway and just generally hung out in it. He's always been good with it, but by the same token he's always had access to it. (Because I've never let him roam free) Does your baby not like his house at all? Instead of giving him free run of the house, could you baby gate him in a room that is easy to clean up when he's had an accident? And keep his crate in there and maybe he will get used to it. (That might waste more time though...?) I'm not really sure what to tell you, this is new to me as well but I've read a few books. Puppies for Dummies and Housetraining for Dummies. They've been very informative!!

well I have the same problem with our almost 5 month old yorkie. but the last few nights I've figured out some things. In the day time he will go about every 2 hours if he is roaming around the house. If he's in his room with the pee pad he can hold it longer. After 6 pm I think he needs to go out more often, so I've started taking him out every hour and the last 2 days have been sucessful and watching him more closer is helping. Tonight I was so excited because every night around 8-8:30 he's going to poop and I've been missing it every time. I was reading last night and he walked on the other side of my husband and did it on the floor. ugh.... I took my eyes of him for 1 min. but tonight I watched his every move and asked him did he have to go outside. well he hesitated a little and then walked slowly to the door. we went out and he pooped. I think you just have to watch every move at night unless you put them in their room with the pee pad. hope this helps some.

| I am litter training my 4.5 month old puppy. I crate her all night which would be like you putting your baby gate up at night. It is a small area like a crate being in the laundry room. But maybe you should limit his space to 2 rooms for a while and let him be with you in the evening for watching tv. I do know that you have to be the boss! The laundry room is like his crib! Babies need their cribs. So when You can't watch him, put him in the laundry room. He should be with you at all times when he is out of his space. Carring him or using a leash helps also to keep him insight. It took me 4 weeks to litter train my baby and I still don't trust her out of my sight. She does not have the run of the house. Accidents will happen...they are babies! I hope this helps. |

| Welcome to YT!!!! Potty training seems to be the # 1 complaint among Yorkie owners! All I can say is that it takes time, consistency and patience. If you can't keep your baby in a crate...then like someone else said limit the amount of rooms he has access to. Daizy is 10 months old and we can go a week or two dry...but then she'll have an oopsies! Have you trained your baby to use the potty pads?? Maybe you could put one or more of those out in the rooms you let him roam free so he could use the pad if he needs too. I'm getting a playpen and am going to use that for my new baby Tulip..she'll have her toys, bed, and potty pad, and that way she can see everything...and not feel like she's all alone. You could even get a used one!! Good luck!!

which means there will be a week of sleepness nights but it will reward itself in the long run...ignore him when he screaming, barking, whining and crying while in his crate...once he quiet down let him out...repeat...he will then begin to see that he only gets on on good behavior...good luck!

| I read something today that says you can try to get them used to going into the crate by putting their meals in there (starting near the door, and moving back to the end) and, over time, closing the door for short periods while they're eating, utilitizing of course - lots of praise!
