I thought that I knew better and kept my 4 month old (now 6 months) free roam in the kitchen with a pee pad during the day. He was about 50/50 - and I took him out every couple hours. He was fine overnight and rarely ever peed or pooped on the pads. I was getting frustrated because I seemed to be unable to (no matter how much I stuck to 'my' schedule) be able to make him get it and tell me when he needed to go outside. He seemed to be on his schedule only and I wasn't privy to the details of it. I admitted to myself that I had a problem and decided to start crate training. I'm not in control as the pack leader if he's dictating the schedule. That will change. lol But I do regret not crate training him from the beginning.
Good luck with your furbaby! You'll get it sorted out.
