| the breeder vs the vet who do you listen to? im so confused, everyone has something to say and its all becoming white noise in my ear. i took koko to the vet and he said she has a staph infection caused by an allergic reation to flea bites (i cant find a single flea in my home and didnt see any jumping on her) and ear mites. i called the breeder not for my monay back but bc she is a nice lady that seemed to give great advice and my mil was planning on buying another dog from her next litter. she is saying he didnt do a skin scraping and didnt see any fleas on the dog so how could he give that diagnosis????? now im pissed bc she has ear mites i have taken her to banfield 4 wks ago for shots and i asked about her skin and they told me she had dry skin and reccommended a oatmeal bath. i have had her proffessionally groomed twice in 5 wks and they supposedly cleaned the hair out of her ears and i saw ith my own eyes the hunk of hair the vet pulled out of her ears. so what was the purpose of the groomer doing it???? i have the pup on a boatload of meds that seem to be working and the breeder is saying dont give it to her. she believes in less pills and thinks its the wrong diagnosis and is brininging me some stuff tonight. im confused, out of $254 and just want my darn puppy better |

| I think I would want to get another vet's opinion. Ear mites in dogs are very rare, especially in puppies. |

| I would go with the vets opinion also. Get your pup healthy again.

| vet I would get a toy dog vet and avoid places like Banfield..they are known for bill padding. Ear mites are common in puppies, they are very contagious, passing from cats to dogs etc..puppy to puppy. You can even get them from the groomers place...plus, if the groomer does not keep the equipment clean the dogs can get the vary same infections the vet is telling you the pup has..learn to groom yiour own puppy if you can or find a groomer who does not deal in volume. The breeder should give a copy of the vet check stating the pup was checked before the sale..and free of fleas, ear mites, parasites and worms..etc. Then it is your job to keep it free of these problems when possible. Good luck |

| YorkieRose- that is interesting. I just had a long talk with my vet because I thought for sure one of my dogs had ear mites. She said she rarely ever sees ear mites in dogs and that the ear mites cats get don't transfer to dogs. She said most often what dogs have are yeast infections. That is what we treated my dog for and it cleared right up. It sure can be hard to know what information in correct. I guess it is always best to get the best advice and back it up with research on our own. |

| First, I suggest going to a vet that specializes in toy breeds, which you are already looking to do. Next, groomers, even the good ones, sometimes miss the ear hair, which mine did because I coincidentally took mine to the vet at the same time and she noticed mine missed some hair. She also noticed they tried to get it, she could tell, they just missed some. Perhaps my dog moved on something. One of mine had a ton of earwax in her ears when I bought her. She kept scratching so I thought of mites. I got an ear cleaning solution called Oti-soothe II to use at bath time and it took weeks of cleaning to get the ear totally cleaned out, but that was the problem. So, it possibly could be buildup. I trust my vet, so whenever an issue has come up, I tell my groomer about it. I have been through 4 and this groomer seems to really try hard to do a good job. However, I probably should take on this task myself. Although I like the breeders, once the dogs were mine, checked out fine, etc., after awhile they are on to other things |

| Banfield Blues When I first got my Kodi he started really biting and scratching so I took him to the Banfield vet at PetSmart. They just gave me some flea stuff. He didn't get better so I found another vet in private practice and he did a skin scraping and discovered that Kodi had skin mites (scabies)!. The vet gave him a shot and he was significantly better in 24 hours. I just don't think the vets at those types of locations are that great.

| Maybe its your climate that causes earmites not to spread. But in the hot areas they are very common. I had a cocker one time and the vet told me cockers are notorious for mites.

| I know what you mean. It *is* very confusing. My breeder and my Vet are not on the same page about much of anything and it is really awful trying to figure things out. I think finding a Vet whose word you trust is the only hope. Good luck to both of us. |

| Finding a good vet is hard! We have one that really works with us breeders! When it comes to breeding he sends them to us! But not with out putting his 2 cents in first! Most only know what they have learned in school about breeding! We try and work together! After all he is the one that went to school! lily |

| I typically believe my breeder over my vet because my vet doesn't know yorkies very well. Just me. |
