Ear mites can transfer from dogs to cats and vise versa. I was given a puppy that came from a house that had several rescue dogs in it. When I took the puppy to be checked by my vet (who is experienced in toy dogs) they found mites ( they actually showed them to me under the microscope) and gave me meds for not only the pup, but for my other 8 dogs, and my cats because they do transfer from one to another. If your dog has mites it looks like coffee grounds when you clean their ears, they are easy enough to treat, and once cleared up you are not usually bothered by them again. Yorkies are known also for yeast infections in their ears because of a lot of hair growing in their ears. I have also had experience with that with a pup I had gotten once that had loads of hair in his ears and would not let you clean them out. I had the vet sedate him to clean out the ears and that is when they found he had a yeast infection pretty bad. Once cleaned out and treated I was able to clean the ears each bath time, and avoid any further trouble with his ears.
