| should i have gotten him?????? okay guys please i really need your opinion, so today me and my husband and 2 girls went shopping and when we were done we decided to go to the spca just to browse. well there were 2 chi's up for adoption. one was very tiny 2 1/2lbs( his name is blueberry) and the other was 4lbs.(her name is cherry) i really loved blueberry his color was like a nice very light grey mixed with tan(beautiful) he was very timmid, wich i totally understand. both are 6 months. but it seemed as though he had a problem with hair loss, wich i wasn't sure what to think of. i asked the workers there and they said it could be due to stress or not eating properly since he was found with his mom and sis as strays. then i went on to ask them if he was tested for any type of health problems, liver shunt, heart worms etc and they said no this really shocked me. because i would think that they would test these dogs for these types of conditions. they went on to say that it was our (the adopter) responsability to get this checked by our own vet.they were looking at me like i was a cop trying to arrest them or something when i was asking these questions. i guess nobody asks them these things. so anyway i didn't adopt him because i was worried about these things and his hair loss, with them not knowing exactly what's going on with the little guy should i have just adopted him anyway?

| <start my personal opinion here> I'm glad you did not get him. I too would totally feel sorry for the poor little things but you just encourage puppymillers to keep pumping the puppies out if they are selling them. The way to hurt puppymillers is to hit their checkbook.. if their puppies don't sell then they don't make money which means they won't churn out all the puppies. I also think if you had gotten him you would have probably have set yourself up for a lifetime of potential problems. Puppymill dogs are genetic time bombs.. they may look fine now but most genetic issues don't present themselves until the dog turns about 3 or 4. Stay strong, you made the right decision. <end opinion>

| My opinion is that you should have gotten the little guy. I worked as an animal control officer for a few years at our local animal shelter and you have no idea of how stressful it is for some dogs. The hairloss is more than likely stress related and will continue to get worse. Shelters dont test dogs for liver shunts and all that stuff because they dont have the financial resources to do so. They are however tested for heartworm. He sounds like a real cute little thing. Just because a dog like that is in the shelter doesn't mean that it is going to have a life full of health issues. I have seen plenty of shelter dogs live long and issue free lives. He is young too so he isn't super set in his ways and would be really simple to train. JMO |

| Wow that is a tough one, cause you want to help the cute little puppies out and yet you don't want a lifetime of problems. I think you did the right thing, they will eventually treat him at the spca if there is something wrong with him and some other lovely family will probably adopt him. I know you must feel guilty though looking into those puppy dog eyes! |

| Chi's I went to the fairgrounds dog show a few weeks ago and they had a Chi rescue table set up. One of the rescues was almost hairless...they said it was mange and it was awful looking. His skin was leathery. They had successfully treated him, but the hair may not return. He scratched alot and there were sores..honestly I think that poor dog should have been put down, he looked miserable. They said as soon as he was stable they were placing him for adoption...I may sound hard hearted, but he looked like a pack of vet bills for the new owner. I don't think I would take a dog with a skin problem..I am not convinced about the stress factor. |

| Anytime I go to any of those places, I want to adopt ALL of them. You did the right thing by not adopting the Chi. It would have been an impulse decision, and you really haven't had the correct amount of time to think of what an impact that would be on CoCo or your family. What if Coco didn't get along with it? Would it really be fair? Besides, the Chi will be adopted very soon. Don't worry! Small dogs always get chosen first! |

| Most shelters test for mange because if they didn't they could possibly have a whole kennel worth the dogs with mange. |

| I think you made the right decision perhaps he would have been totally healthy all his life however you will never know and there is no use beating yourself up over it.

| Well, here is an idea.....maybe you could take him to the vet as a "donation". If the vet says he is pretty healthy and the hair loss seems to be stress related, maybe you should go for it. I wanted my puppies tested for liver shunt and she said they don't do that unless the dog has symptoms. I am surprised that spca hasn't tested or treated them for ANYTHING. All the numerous shows I watched on tv about them show them taking them to the vet if something seemed wrong. If you do take the pup to the vet, make sure to take a stool sample with you. Please let us know what you decide. I know a vet isn't cheap, but I honestly think that if you just let it pass, you will ALWAYS wonder .... "what if"..... |

| If you think that the puppy was sick , maybe it a good think that you didn't adopt him . 3 days ago , my friend Marlene called me to ask me if I was able to take care of a 5 days old puppy and I said yes , I don't even know if the little boy will live . The Animal Protection is paying for the milk formulas and the cares because he is a little sick . I don't understand the the S.P.C.A. agent telling you that they don't know about what he have . |
