torn between family and puppy. please help. =(

I'm sorry you're having this problem. Like others said, I would try to find somebody to help you. There's no way you have come have in the middle of the day to feed him and take him on a short walk. I know this is hard, but I'm sure you'll make the best decision for you and your puppy

we sort of had the same situation because i work and i am in school as well!

we got him on a schedules...its hard when they are puppies because they are SO energetic and need so much love, but they will grow used to it, and you will not feel as bad anymore AS LLONG AS U STICK TO IT!

we feed our baby and walk him as soon as we get up, then we play a bit before we go to work/school. then if i am home for lunch (this is not often) we play, but he does not eat again until between 8-9. this makes it so we have to get up early to take him our to go pody...but he is happy and healthy and we are too!

I agree I have one puppy that his mom got a new job when he turned two. She is gone about 10 to 12 hours a day. He is fine with a walk in the morning and a walk at night and he is very well adjusted. He loves animal planet!!!

I think there are worse situation's then Being in a caring home. He could be just throw outside with no food & water.
She asked for a suggestion Because her family wont give the dog a potty break or feed it I gave her a solution. I don't think she needs to rehome the dog because she out alittle later than some of us I know of alot of people on this forum that work Full days & i'm sure there dog's are fine.

I hope things work out for you. It's amazing how well they adapt. My husband is home all winter and I work 3 or 4 days a week but in the summer my husband works wed to sun. So there a couple days a week that they are alone from 10am to 4pm and they do fine. They keep each other company and watch the stock market on tv.. I live in nj but at the shore so you are about 45 min from me. I know you feel bad for him but please try everything possible before thinking about rehoming him. It is upsetting to them also as they become attached to us also. One of mine is a rescue, that is now in her fourth home and I have seen the problems she has had trusting us. It brings tears to my eyes just to see her little tail wag.

I see your point, but I'm going to have to respectfully disagree. I really don't think dogs need someone to be with them 24/7. I'd be more worried that that would make them have SERIOUS seperation anxiety issues. There's nothing wrong with leaving a pup home during the day as long as it is still socialized and cared for and loved. And having someone drop by to let them out/play with them once or twice a day while you're away is enough, IMO. There are plenty of people on here who work all day - it's a part of life and is necessary in order to provide money to care for the dog.

I sincerely hope that Christina doesn't feel like she has to rehome her puppy just because she's away from him for a few hours a day. It's not worth the emotional pain, if you ask me. yes, I could understand that she should rehome Benny if she were hardly EVER home, but she leaves in the morning and comes home in the evening, like anyone who works.

Tucker never had someone with him all day when he was a puppy and he's perfectly socialized, housebroken, and trained. It's not necessary to ALWAYS be around your pup, as long as they are safe when you're not home, and get love and attention when you are.

JMO of course, but I wanted to share it.

I think this dog will be fine.

yeah teddy's separation got bad. It's why he's sick now because he started acting out like getting into the trash and chew things to shreds(like a wii controller) we have to put him in our kitchen now while we're gone to make sure he doesn't get into the trash. Everything else we put up. Not being home all the time is good for the little guys

Do EVERYTHING you can before re-homing him. I just think that you will regret it so much and if you ever get another dog later in your life, you will always wish you had kept little Benny. It's not a decision you can go back on once you have re-homed him. I feel so so bad for you. You clearly love him very much, as you are willin to put his needs and feelings before our own. I agree w/ the other member that said to put down pee-pee pads and a food timer. My dogs have a doggy door (obviously, that's not possible for you) and are free-fed. They are by themselves M-F 8-5 and they are fine! I think as long as you give your dog a place to pee, eat/drink and play, he will be fine! 5:30 or 7:00 is not that late! He will be excited to see you every time you walk through the door regardless of the time. Just make sure you give him lots of love when you get home.

actually with Teddy his previous owner lovedhim so much and was crying when I came over the day to pick him up. So I gave her a month to change her mind and give back the money and she gave me a month period of time to change my mind. I figured that since she loved him so much that if she found a way around her schedule she could have him. I even offered to petsit him for a little bit of money. But in the end she decided it was best for me to have him. After the first 3 days I did give him back but missed him terribly and in that time she noticed how much I did for him. I worked out a lot of his tangled fur(he ended up having to be shaved) and bought him all kinds of toys and other items. She also said when I left he stayed at the window with both paws on it and wouldn't play or anything. It's been two months since then and I couldn't imagine not having him.

I hope something can be worked out for you, and it is the best situation for you dog too. There have been excellent suggestions on here and there is ways you can keep him.
