I agree w/ the other member that said to put down pee-pee pads and a food timer. My dogs have a doggy door (obviously, that's not possible for you) and are free-fed. They are by themselves M-F 8-5 and they are fine! I think as long as you give your dog a place to pee, eat/drink and play, he will be fine! 5:30 or 7:00 is not that late! He will be excited to see you every time you walk through the door regardless of the time. Just make sure you give him lots of love when you get home.
