torn between family and puppy. please help. =( Hello everyone, I stumbled upon this great forum site this morning while in a state of much sadness and confusion. I currently have a baby boy yorkie named Benny, he's now 4 months old and I've had him for 2 months and he's already my whole life. I'm completely in love with him. The problem is...my family had told me they would help me with the dog through my last year of school and now their opinions are changing...I'm going into my last year of college and will need help feeding and walking him at night because I will not be getting home until 7 or 8. I don't know what to do and am completely stressed about the situation. My puppy Benny loves attention and loves to be with people and I feel even though he's happy with me, I want him to have the world and more...The near thought of me reselling him makes me filled with guilt and sadness. I just want him to have the best life he can... Any suggestions from yorkie lovers would be so greatly appreciated! Thank you... Christina  |
welcome to YT :) Im so sorry that your family has decided they can no longer help you, maybe there is a friend or neighbor that can come over and walk him and feed him for you? of course you have to be able to trust this person. I know in my local paper people sometimes put out an ad for dog walkers/sitters, Craigs list also has these posts. another option would be to find a doggy daycare where he will be watched and have companionship (these places can get expensive) I think if you decide to leave him alone for a few hours he will do just fine, only thing is does he need to be walked or does he go on a wee wee pad also? |
I feel so sorry for you that you are having troubles now that you have your dog. Its sad that family tell you one thing and then they let you down. Maybe you can find a friend that will help you our for awhile. Its hard we don't always know our neighbors but maybe you could find someone. I'm sure if you are going to school you don't have the money to hire someone that will come in and walk him and feed him. People like that have referances and you would feel better about that. |
So sorry you are going through this. Please let us know how everything works out for you. |
Hello and welcome to YT! I'm so sorry to hear about your dilemma. I would just try to get through this year and I'm sure everything will be fine. Best of Luck to You! |
That's such a shame you are now put into such a predicument. Yes, your right. This breed requires lot's of attention in fact they demand it or can easily get depressed. Your wise to understand that. Look around and ask neighbor's. Perhaps someone can take him out one or twice during the day and play with him for a couple of minutes during the day. Buddy was fine while I worked for 8hrs during the day but I did give the rest of my time to him. I spent and still do 1/2 hr every morning playing with him and at night I go directly home and spend it with him. If you can't make these commitments then it really would be wise to re-home him. I know that is going to be hard but you have to do what's best for him. Good luck and I hope it works out for both of you. |
I would put a peepee pad down & get a timer Feeder. |
I am sorry to hear of this.. maybe you could post another thread asking if other yt members live close to you.. that maybe are willing to help you out.. like if some one is close enough maybe keeping him during the week for you and then you have him for your bonding on the week ends.. this is a thought. but I would not give up until all is exhauted.. oh by the way.. welcome to yt...hope this gives you some new hope.. anne |

Well ,I do not know if this is an option for you or not! There are doggy day cares- and maybe on your longer days - take him for 1/2 a day! also- pet walkers/sitters! Or do you know any teenagers- they might walk him for a litte pocket change- but make sure they are old enough to take proper care! goos luck! |
I wasn't allowed to have a dog when I was a kid so in HS I watched the neighbor's dog all the time. You just need to find a HS kid who would love to play with little Benny after school. Actually there is a middle school aged girl in my neighborhood who loves Sammy so much and can't get a dog. She posted a flier about her dog walking services - $2 for a walk - so cute! I know she wants a dog so bad so I pay her once in a while to walk Sam. Her mom says it gets her out of the house and away from the TV. You must have a kid like that nearby??? This girl is young but she is destined to become a vet or something because she is just a natural with dogs. I'd trust her to take care of Sammy. |
I like the idea of having a neighbor kid help out. Good luck! |
thank you for all your kind words and trying to help me! i greatly appreciate it! the only problem is...we just recently moved- and i now live about 30 minutes from any one i know...and i feel weird asking a neighbor to put such commitment into my dog... i'm struggling with this...i think it might be best to rehome him so he can get the most attention, maybe with someone who stays home all day like a stay at home mom...but i just know no one can give him the love i give him, even if i don't see him until 5:30 at night. it's so hard to imagine him not around. he's truly made my life better. i just know i have to make this decision soon...i'll just grow more and more attached to him as the days go by. i feel awful. |
i also really don't have the money to get him a sitter or take him to a daycare 5 days a week... |
