Hi! I have a full time job as well as my hubby, so jeanie is home alone all day. We have a dog walker come in at 12:30 - to break up the day - and I know she loves it (I watch her on my webcam and see her excitement when she shows up and how she waits in the window starting at 11:30 for her - so cute). I make sure there is NOTHING For her to get into - and the room where the cat litter is, I just put a baby gate up, so Jeanie can't get in. It's also where the computer is with all the cords!! She does chew cords when she can get at them........ We have slowly introduced her to the whole house. Originally, around the age your pup is, we kept her in a crate all day, with the break at 12:30........to potty train her. She didn't have room in the crate to go, it was a small crate (recommended by the yorkie talk community) so that she would hold it, and she did....and then was trained in a month or so........Once that happened, we let her roam around the kitchen, till a year old. Then the whole house, minus the rooms with the doors closed. We have always had the dog walker to break up the day, and give her time to pee, and socialize with her and other dogs on the walk. It seems to work well for Jeanie. I hope you find just the right formula for your baby too

Hi Mrlmonroe, Thanks for the advice. I think we will look into a dog walker. And we will slowly add rooms as housebreaking progresses. Our winters are so harsh here that it was recommended that we train our Yorkie to go indoors on the potty pads, and in addition we live in on the fourth floor (soon to be fifth floor when we move) so outdoors is not a quick option when potty training unfortunately. Good advice and nice to hear that your Jeanie seems so happy with the solution you have found that works for you!

Glad to help. Also, as a note, we don't have a yard either, so have always had a small pen that collapses and can be set up anywhere on the patio with a pee pad. So she knows to go on the pad, but it's always outside. Even when we have been in a hotel room, we can bring the pen, and pee pad (we make sure we have a small patio at least) and then she is all set. On one occasion, we set the pen up inside in the kitchen of a unit, with the pad.....and since she's so used to it, she knew what to do. Now if she would just go more often on a walk now... She's starting to more regularly..... good luck!!

My advice.... I am not into crate training, instead I prefer an x-pen. Being 10 weeks old, I would ALWAYS leave water, food and pees pads. Most people that feed kibble do free feed their entire lives, as Yorkies tend to eat a little here and a little there. Peeing on the edge. Since you are going to contain him, now is your chance to introduce a litter box, but with the pee pad inside the box. This forces him to step into the box to do potty, therefore no more peeing on the edges. Please be careful 'what' you leave for him to chew on during the day...always inspect it and think to yourself: Can this be dangerous in any way? That goes for toys and chew treats. Better to be safe than sorry

My Barnaby is 4 months old now, and I had exactly the same concerns. I set up a room with a fence, left him a nice secure crate to get into when he wanted, a pee pad, and toys, and he has done wonderfully well. I recently expanded his area of freedom to both part of my bedroom and the hall, gating off rooms in which I am not yet comfortable letting him roam freely. And he seems to love it. I walk him and play with him for an hour before leaving for work, and then we have a lot of playing and at least one walk after I get home. I have been vitisting him at lunch as my summer work schedules is pretty loose, so he's enjoyed that. Also, I have a petcam set up, so I know for a fact he sleeps almost all day long, and then perks up when I get home! He seems pretty happy, thank goodness! So I would imagine a set up like this might work for you.

We just have a regular old webcam from Logitech, not a particular petcam or anything. I set it up in the room where I keep Barnaby, and then configured the cam to broadcast on a site called webcamnow.com. I am fortunate in that the site is not blocked by my work's network - I know other people who absolutely cannot view the cam from work, probably because of their firewalls, etc. If you do get a pet cam that you want to keep live all day long - remember to turn off ALL your power saving functions on your computer - the first day I couldn't figure out why the petcam kept going offline, and then it hit me - my computer went into power saving mode every so often and logged me off the internet. And of course, webcamnow.com itself has it's own problems and it goes off line from time to time, but it's a free service, and on the whole it works great. There may be other websites that work better, but I've been too lazy to look. on webcamnow, anyone else can see your cam too, but as long as that doesn't bother you, you are good to go. When I log on, I can see that several other people have their own pets on cam too, which is cute! Last edited by IanNYC; 07-16-2008 at 03:40 PM.
