| what to do the first night? We've never had a puppy before and our yorkie is coming home on Thursday. Any advice on how to handle the very first night? We will probably pick him up about 6:00 p.m. after work. Do I put him in his carrier in the car to come home? I was planning on it, but I've also read not to force him to go in there. Maybe he'll just crawl right in, I don't know... Then when we get him home, do we let him explore the house or keep him in one area at first? I don't want him to be overwhelmed. Do I put a collar and a leash on him right away? What size collar? How long of a leash? He's only going to be 11 weeks. I don't know if he's started any potty training or not. I've read some books on that but I'm not sure if he's really old enough to start. Should we just plan on taking him out about once an hour? Can he go all night without going potty? Thanks a lot. I know that's a lot of questions! Last edited by newyorkiepup; 05-30-2008 at 09:49 AM. |

| WHat I did when I picked up Snickers he was 12 weeks. i picked him up and kept him on my lap during the drive to the house. He was a little nervous too. When we got home i made him walk in a small area not to big.. and then let him sleep alot.. I made a crate for him and kept it next to my bed ... cause i didnt had a crate at that day. I wont buy a collar,. but i would buy a harness that much better for him.. cause they r so tiny.. I will let him use to the harness when he is adjusted to his new home.. And thej put it on for a few minutes to see how he respond.. if he dont mind you dont really have to leave it on, but only put it on when you go for a walk.. You can also put a t-shirt with your smell in his crate or bed.. And make sure he is near you when you go to bed. I will go out with him after he plays, sleeps or when he walks in circles.. ( most of the time they need to do poop then) Before you give him his food, make sure you walk him before hand. its better for the stomach, when you walk him straight after he will run and its not good when he just ate. Some people walk them after dinner, but i never done it.. Make sure his food have the time to settle down. Snicker started to peep a little when he needed to potty in the night the first weeks.. so soon as he is awake pick him up and put him outside and praise him loud and give him a treat when he does it outside ! Good luck with your new puppy. and let us know how it went. love priscilla and snickers Quote:

| First of all welcome to YT and congratulations on your new furbaby! I let my furkids sit in my lap when we picked them up which is a no no. I should have had them in a crate because they would have been safer and because Tucker got carsick all over my lap Bring a few treats with you and if you lead him in there with one you will hardly be forcing him. He might whine for a while, but I'm sure he'll calm down after a little bit. I would keep him confined to one room for a while so he's not overwhelmed and so you can keep an eye on his potty dance. It's never to early to start potty training so I would say, yes, taking him out every hour would be ideal until his bladder has time to grow and until he gets the general idea that he should potty outside. There will be accidents though so invest in some good cleaner such as Nature's Miracle that can be found at nearly any pet store. On the collar, he should only wear one for identification purposes. For no reason should you attach his leash to it. A harness is the best things for dogs this tiny. They have very delicate tracheas and shouldn't have extra pressure on them from a collar attached to a leash. This can cause a problem called collapsed trachea, which from it's name you can tell is not a good thing. Good luck with everything and if you need anything feel free to pm me!

Ok, no collars....get a harness. The yorkies are prone to trachea damage with collars. Yes, take him out for a pee often. If he drinks then wait 20 minutes or so and try. If he didn't go then wait again and try. My yorkie went all night in the crate with no accidents from 8 weeks old...but all yorkies are very different. You may have to get up if he whines. Keep the crate by your bed and so he can see you. Don't let him out as soon as he whines...wait for a lull in whining and then take hime out otherwise you teach him that whining gets him out. | |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Welcome Congratulations!!! I would put him in the crate on the way home and what I do is have someone else drive and then I hold the carrier on my lap and then I can put my hand in and comfort them. I always let them look around a little in a smaller area and offer them water and if it's been awhile a little food. Then I put them where I am going to have them stay (crate, playpen) and let then rest a little. I never put collars on mine as I use harnesses because of their delicate necks and i don't leave that on. If you are training him to go outside, take him out every hour or when you see him sniffing the ground looking for a place to go. Take him out and say go potty or whatever you are going to say to cue him and praise him when he goes and maybe a tiny treat. If you are going to pee pad train him I put one in their crate on one end. If you are not home during the day it will be awhile before he can hold it all day. Some do pretty good at night or some need to go out during the night a couple of times. Just enjoy and remember they grow up fast. This is just how I do things others may have better tips.

| Do we take him out to the potty spot with the leash on him? Will he be old enough to go for walks? If so, how far? |

| I wouldn't put a leash (with a harness, not a collar) on him the first time out unless you don't have a secure area. The first day home I'd just make sure to bond with him and make him feel at home. Hand feeding him a bit always helps with the initial bonding. I wouldn't give him free run of the house at first. Find out from the breeder what type of potty training has been started. You may want to duplicate that at first and transition him to the method you plan to use. Remember, puppies don't have control of their bladder until 5 months or so. There will be 'accidents' but don't get upset about it. Try to catch him being good and praise him for it and don't give him too much opportunity to be 'bad'. We start ours out in an x-pen with a bed, food dish and newspaper to go on. When they're out, we limit them to one area and place paper around for them to go on. I don't really expect them to learn to 'go outside' until later but everyone does things a little differently. Congratulations and good luck with your new baby!! |

| Okay. Our back yard is fenced in so he would be safe out there. We'll maybe just put a harness and a leash on him for short times so he gets used to it a little. Our neighbors have a yorkie - he's 10 and he weighs 14 pounds - his name is Bentley. We share a fence with them and it's chain link so they'll have some contact with one another I'm sure. I hope they get along. Our neighbor says Bentley really likes other yorkies. We are taking Cruiser to the vet the day after we bring him home for a check up and to get some information so I'm sure they'll tell us about the shots and stuff. The breeder said he will have had 2 sets before we get him next week. |

| Congrats on the new puppy and for asking questions ahead of time! We did not crate train our puppy (she was only 7 weeks when we got her, I know way too young, the breeder lied to us, long story!), but instead use a play pen (made for puppies), Pet Gear Medium Soft Puppy Playpen Pink Ice - Dog Fence Plus In it she has her bed, water dish, potty pad and some toys. Other than the first night, she has slept through the night every night. Untill recently she would wake up and go potty a couple times during the night (right on her pad from the begining!). Now she only goes once or sometimes holds it till morning. And she almost never pooped inside it, waits to go outside. She also stays in the play pen during the day when we are gone. She may be getting a little too big for it soon (15 weeks old now), so we will switch to giving her the kitchen or another area gated off. But I think the play pen has worked great! It is what the breeder and a friend of mine recommended. Good luck! Good luck! |

| if you try to crate train, a hot (not too hot) water bottle really helps. |
