| ![]() joking aside...it must be a really big scary problem for you guys...one that we don't have to worry about here in the uk..well i don't think a bird has killed a small dog in this country...we do get some pretty big crows..and seagulls!

| ![]() Put a fake owl in your yard on a post. Hawks won't come around if they think another bird of prey is already there.

| ![]() I wonder if you cant find a plastic owl or hawk with wings outstretched like it is getting ready to dive, so it is more obvious than just an owl sitting. ![]()

If you have a large yard, is there any way you can create a dog run, say off of your garage? That way you can install some kind of cover over it; that is what we did immediately after losing Tigger. Please keep a VERY watchful eye. Do not leave your babies even for a minute to answer the phone, front door, whatever. Sorry for my rant, but I just so want to avoid ANYONE's furchild being taken in such a horrendous manner. Good luck! Lauren

OMG I can't imagine how you felt/feel!!! Did his dog run have a cover on it? I'm so scared hearing all of this!! I'm glad now that we don't have a fenced in yard so Samson can't go outside without us.

| ![]() Contact your local conservationist for suggestions in your area. I'd hate for you to have to pen up your yorkies in your own back yard if there is something else that is a safe alternative. Good luck!

I was however, so completely devastated by the whole incident, that I did have a doggy-door cut from the house to the garage. At certain times of the year, when I leave the house, I will close off the little door to the run and only leave the access to the garage open so that my babies can go potty there on paper pads. This might be a tad overprotective, but I just cannot risk my precious Mango and Spanky. ![]() We do what we must for these utterly defenseless and oh-so-precious little creatures, ![]() ![]() Lauren

The thing I did here about using plastic owls- they need to be moved 1-2 times a week! The pest get use to them in 1 spot-move it again-it freaks them out again for a while! So moving once a week, would have to be done!

| ![]() Yes...I live in a very rural area of AZ and a coyote got in my yard and got one of my Greyhounds. She is a tri-pod and we think that she was out side laying in the sand and the coyote jumped the fence and got her...the rest of the Greyhounds heard the noise and scared the coyote away. My daughter was the first one home and found Jax and called me at work. She was saved after extensive surgery, but we almost lost her. (DH baby..can't lose her!). Anyway we ended up making two pens on the side of the garden area. One is 180 ft by 12 ft and the other is 7 ft by 5 ft and my husband built a screen cover for the smaller one. I have also found that I can leave the Greys in the large pen with Max and the birds do not even try to circle him. Yet they will if I am out there with him...

| ![]() Please, please take heed. My precious little Yorkie boy, Tigger was taken by a Hawk from his VERY secluded dog run. I am so sorry! This terrifies me! The hawks dont seem to care whos out there, if they are hungry, anythings fair game! I have a huge dog, Dove, 1/2 golden ret and 1/2 black chow. he looks like a black golden with a purple tongue, and hes the body guard also but he doesnt even deter them. *SIGH* I think I need to turn my yard into a bio-dome! Minus the predators. But until I win the lotto, a covered pen will have to do. I will contact a conservationist to find out what else I can do, great suggestion, thanks. I will post any new info I find out from them, maybe together we can save another wee life. |

| ![]() I am so sorry to hear you are dealing with this. I live in Florida too and (Knock On Wood) I do not see many hawks near me. Where are you if you don't mind me asking? Also I was thinking...if your yard if fenced in what about stringing bird string from one side of the fence to the other. Basically it is just clear plastic yard/string that will keep birds from diving down because it is strung all over the place but yet high enough for a human to still walk under it. I have heard that is what you can do to keep birds out - a lot of outside dining places do it around here because of the seagulls. I am actually thinking of doing this now too just because I keep hearing so many horror story’s and my Mia and Murphy are only 3 and 6 pounds. I let them have run in my yard a lot and some times when I am not home. ![]()

| ![]() I will look into the yard string. We live near Ft lauderdale in south FL. I have tons of birds, vultures, owls ( they make me nervous too), and a host of others. Its been the hawks that are the worst. Im so glad you read this thread, I used to let my 2 out alone too, but I never will again! After 3 near misses with the devil birds, I am only inches away from my wee ones now at all times outside. thanks for the great suggestion. Good Luck with your yard too! |
