Even the strong and sturdy (and healthy) tinies require a little extra caution so they stay that way. I would hope that people wouldn't deny this and endanger their little ones. Yorkies are fragile little dogs, tiny Yorkies are even more so. Unfortunately a lot of sad stories on this website confirm this.

edit to add- actually my 9 pounder has LP and SHOULDN'T be jumping off furniture either- just can't always catch her in time. Sugar can't jump up so it's actually easier.
Lil Bit is 24 ounces his sire is a Champion and his dam is pointed they are both standard size was doing this breeding for something to show he has a sister that is older that is a Champion, he is 5 months 5 1/2 inches long and 5 1/2 inches tall.
His biggest issue is making sure he is warm, eats enough and making sure his sugar levels don't bottom out. And I am scared to death of something falling on him, just anything falling off the table could do him in.
So it is basically like a newborn pups care.
He loves to play like a normal pup but there are limitations that if I let him play too much, too long etc he will not have the energy to eat.
So he is on special care
This is a link to him after he had crashed and was back up and at his normal self.

Potty training is an art form with this breed but it can be done. I think the tinies can be easier if they use potty pads. The thing that makes it hard is they are so small it is hard to notice when they are doing a potty dance to go outside. Shelby uses potty pads and she was a breeze to train. She is also the most cuddly dog you could ever imagine. And she loves everyone, thinks that everyone is out for a walk in the mornig to see her and she greets them accordingly.

Which is one more reason not to make size so important that you forget all that other stuff. Like temperment and beauty of the breed. It's a package deal when you buy from a good breeder.

I dont know if this was being addressed to me or everyone in general but when I said I dont feel I have to be watching my every step around him...I dont. Yes he is small but I dont feel that caring for him is like the other poster mentioned. Doesnt mean I am not careful and he is endangered. He is a very happy, loved, spoiled baby

Nope, not addressed to you. It was addressed to the general idea that tiny doesn't require more thought and concern than bigger dogs. And the tinier they are, the more one has to watch out for them. A 24 oz. dog needs someone that is going to give it extra care. Now that would be more work than most of us would want to handle.

Max sounds perfect and I am sure you are a great Mom.

It is a labor of love that really is stressful with one this small as you know.
Long nights with getting up every two hours for feedings alot of times you just can't sleep from the stress.
I just hope that someone who reads this will realize that you don't want a puppy from a breeder that is willing to breed little delicate girls and cut them open everytime for a CSection so they can have a little puppy.
If you desire a little one, find someone who happens to have a runt.
Its best to get one after 6 months or 9 months is even better on the small ones.

Yeah that. With the exception of the extreme tinies (like the 24 oz pup mentioned which I honestly have no experience with), I don't understand what the extra care is. I'm very careful with all of my dogs. Even Gracie at 8or 9 pounds is still a small dog and would be hurt if she were stepped on or fell. The only extra caution I take with Sugar is not allowing him to jump off of furniture and as I already mentioned, he's the easiest to do so since he can't jump up. Besides that, I the only extra care I can think Sugar gets is I don't let people hold him but truthfully I'm not thrilled when people pick Gracie or Spike up either.

For me, the extra care is heights, being underfoot, dropping anything - stuff like that. Sometimes, play w/ Wylie (7.5 lbs) can get a bit rough too - and Marcel gets a little hurt - not Wylie's fault, it's just that Marcel is more vulnerable than Wylie. It was worse when I first got Marcel (he is now 1) bc things can go wrong SO fast w/ these little guys. He weighed 20 oz. when I got him at 4 mths. and it was REALLY scary at times. He now weighs 3 lbs. and though he is much sturdier now - I still find him markedly more vulnerable than my Wy.

Lolita is adorable. And what good owner you are for educating people about the risks. I'll bet everyone who sees her wants one just like her.

She is a beautiful, healthy almost 3 pounds gal and I take it upon myself to use the attention we get from her size and cuteness to educate people on the truths about there being no such things as teacups, and the dangers and health risks of tiny dogs!

I see it as a blessing in disguise that although she is tiny, she is healthy and she has a Mommy who loves her so much that she has no problems with speaking up on the subject to whoever will listen
