I have a 5 month old little girl an I have been trying to potty train my baby. I have done everything I can think of an still she wont go out side or on a puppy pad. Also how many times a day should I change her pad out? Another thing she will see someone outside an run after them the main road is right that I tell her no an she gets in trouble but she still does it even when I tell her no how do I get her to know what no means?

how i wish i could help you. i feel your pain. it took my muffy 1yr to train. my kirby 14 weeks. coco 9months old and still not potty trained. my vinny 6months old and still not potty trained.

If you are going to train her on a potty pad, I would do 2 things.
1. I would enclose the "potty" area with an x-pen or something else. I would take her there every hour on the hour or every 1/2 hour depending on her potty needs, and close her in there and continue to repeat the "go potty" mantra until she does go.
2. I would spray her potty pads with spray that stimulates the puppy to go pee.

If you are taking her outside I would:

1. Also spray the grass area where you want her to go with the stimulation spray, too.
2. Put her on a leash and keep repeating the "go potty" mantra and don't wander too far from the potty sprayed area. And stay there until she goes potty.
or 3. x-pen the area outside you want her to go, spray it and put her in there and she does not come out until she goes.

You must be in attendance no matter which method you use. Don't leave her in the x-pen unattended, because you need to be there the 2nd she goes potty, so that you can praise and reward her.

All good advice from Ladylavender. I especially wanted to emphasize the REWARD. Be sure you adequately reward - you gotta make it worth their while to potty where you want them to! For the dog, it's easier to potty when and where they want. Why should they wait and go where you want them to? Only because it pays well!

As far as the road problem, I'd suggest 2 things. First, you need to teach a solid "come" command. There were good directions in this thread:

Second, I'd keep her on a leash. Anytime she approached the road, I give a loud "unh uh" and pull her away. Once she knows come, follow that with a "come" plus treat and reward. Road = unhappy mom. Away from road = really happy mom. Make sense?

Good luck, no advice here really. Our Dudley is 7 months old and we just got him and he was already used to going outside with the other Yorkies he was with. The first night, he pottied inside and then (knock on wood), he has had no other accidents. We take him out and say "Go potty" and if he goes, he gets a treat. He is doing better than I thought he would.
The breeder said he uses a puppy pad, so we bought some and he doesn't use one here, we leave it out, but he don't use it.

My Otis is a "runner". He will never be able to be outside without a leash or a fenced in area. If he had the chance, he would take off in a heartbeat. I think some dogs have that hunting instinct. I don't have any advice for you on the potty training but I wish you luck.

It seems we are having the same problem Daisy see someone outside she runs an she's smart she runs from me when I say she will go anyways I am trying to get her to know what no means it just doesn't seem to be working. Im scared she is going to get ran over or hurt in some way. I don't know what to do. She loves to play outside. What kind of spray do I use for her potty area?

I had another question how do I discipline her when we does something bad without spanking or yelling at her?

Why won't you leash her? If she is leashed she cannot run away or get run over or hurt.

There is a spray that we get here at Petco or PetsMart. It is specifically to help a puppy have to go pee. They sniff it and it stimulates them to go. I am not sure if you can get it in Germany, but you could ask a clerk or attendant at the store and ask them if there is such a product.

I think it's more important to be in control of the good behavior first. You must train her first to what you want. That is why keeping her on a leash and training her on the "come" command is important. (see FirstYorkie's comments) I think that you need to set aside training times throughout the day and/or week. Practice all the good behaviors. Take her on the leash and practice going out to the road and give her a big Uh-Uuh or a sharp loud noise, like FirstYorkie recommends. That is going to teach her that the road is not "good". Disciplining and training are really all in the same instance. The first year of your puppy's life should be about training on the acceptable behaviors.

Some people keep a spray bottle of water or can of pennies (loud noise) as their source of discipline. But understand, the discipline cannot come at a time that your puppy is loose and running away. At that point the only thing you can expect is to do damage control.

I do have her on a leash I just started I hate to have to put her on one while we are in the yard cause she loves to play I take her out to potty yet we play outside alot through out the day. She does great on a leash. That what I have started doing is putting her on a leash. Thank you oh an the spray we are going back to the states to visit our family in a week so I will go to petsmart an get her some. Thank you very much.
