All good advice from Ladylavender. I especially wanted to emphasize the REWARD. Be sure you adequately reward - you gotta make it worth their while to potty where you want them to! For the dog, it's easier to potty when and where they want. Why should they wait and go where you want them to? Only because it pays well!
As far as the road problem, I'd suggest 2 things. First, you need to teach a solid "come" command. There were good directions in this thread:

Second, I'd keep her on a leash. Anytime she approached the road, I give a loud "unh uh" and pull her away. Once she knows come, follow that with a "come" plus treat and reward. Road = unhappy mom. Away from road = really happy mom. Make sense?
