| Outside potty experiences Anyone who has their yorkie potty outside, I'd appreciate if you could share your experience with me. Our two pups, 8 months old, have been going in the house since 3 months old (they aren't pad trained, they go on it if I take them to it, but they won't usually go over to it on their own %100 of the time). Recently, we made the switch to outdoors because we didn't feel pad training was going to take. Its been 3 weeks, and I'm fairly ok with the results. Basically, they have no problems going outside (unless its cold and/or wet) and they don't have any accidents if we watch them carefully. But basically, I have no life since they go out every 60 minutes and they have playtime with me and my wife for 15-30 minutes after (so we really get 15-30 minutes of every hour to ourselves!). I would consider them trained when I don't have to stop my life every 30-60 minutes and take them out, and they could just let me know when they have to go (if its every hour so be it, but at least I get the other 55 minutes back since I don't have to follow them around), thus letting me go about my business without having to keep and eye on them. So I'm waiting for the "communication" to develop and wondering from you all how long it took, or even what form it comes in. Or just a general time line the untrained-trained path your dog took. I'm thinking it'll take my dogs a long time to train since they pottied inside so long (untrained at that), and they are older. We do have bells, but they are scared of them and I'm not convinced they could hit them hard enough for me to hear if I was listening to my headphones or watching tv or in general doing anything. I'm hoping eventually they'll wine at the door or bark or tug on me or something. I thank you all for any advice/war stories that you can share. |

| I can share how I am training Gordon, he is 4 months old. I got him when he was 12 weeks. Because I am home all day.....I bought a small kennel and started him on a feeding schedule and potty schedule. If he was sleeping or in his kennel , I kept it by me at all times. The first two weeks , I took him out the same door every time , each time he awoke, played, ate , or drank......(it is time consuming)......I also kept him kennel by my bed at night and if he whined , I took him out. Each time I took him out.....it was on a leash......and sometime we would be out 15 minutes......each time he potty, I told him , good potty and gave him a treat. If he didn't potty.....I would bring him back in and put him in the kennel and wait a few minutes and then take him back out.....I kept doing this till he did potty. If he had a accident on the floor and I didn't catch him doing it.......I cleaned it up right away....and never said anything to him. If I caught him in the act inside .....I clap my hands and say NO bad potty.......and even if he finished, I would take him out the same door and say.......potty (just to show him where he WAS suppose to go). If he was out of the kennel , he was on a leash and was by my side 90% of the time.....if not he was in the same room with me. I only allowed him in the kitchen to play and roam freely. He is now 4 months old.........and he hasn't had a accident in the house in days. He does not bark to go out.....but he sits by the door we got out to potty.....I constantly watch him to see if he is sitting there. He hasn't had a accident in his kennel at night in over a week and a half. I bought the bells and hung them about a week ago......he was scared of them at first. But each time I take him out......I hold a treat by his nose and then move them to the bells ........after a couple of days he started jumping up by the bells and slightly hitting them......when he did, I would say....go potty........today, he jumped and hit the bells several times when I held the treat there....... As soon as we walk to his potty spot.....I say, potty and he starts sniffing and finds a spot and goes. I felt like you did at first........all i did was spend time taking him out and watching him...... I also kept a chart of the time when he ate, the time he did potty......so now i can figure out when to take him out.......it has gotten easier......I am hoping we are on our way to be 100% trained soon. I also have wood floors in my kitchen and don't allow him on my carpets......I took up all the throw rugs in the kitchen. i know if he has a accident in the house now.....it is my fault and not his. Sometimes I wish he was a barker to let me know when he has to go.......but he isn't. Good luck and hang in there........the work is so rewarding.....even if it so time consuming now.

| Uma is almost 7 mo. She was 4mo. when she came to us. To get her to indicate she needed to go outside, every time I took her out I would say "Weewee" and put her close to the door and then raise her front paws and tap the door 2-3 times saying "Weewee" each time. Now she will do it on her own, but it is really quick so I have to be watching for this very closely. Also, sometimes the little booger lies and just wants to go out to play!!! Usually when she taps the door she does her stuuf about the time she hits the ground. So there is no time to lose between her indication and the act!

| Bells I'm trying the same method with my Sassy. So far, so good! She has only had one accident, when I brought her to work, I think because she is unfamilair with the place so far, and it is a pet friendly environment (despite being a law firm!) so I think she smells other animals "accidents" that weren't properly cleaned up. I thought I would start trying the bells, and I hung one of those christmas bell necklaces, (you know with the big bell on the end?) on my back door, with a little piece of elaxtic to make it bounce. Every time we go out I say, Sassy, Bell! Outside! And she jumps up to ring it then waits for me to put her harness on. I think she's catching on. She rang it last night for the first time by herself, and we went out and she pottied!

| Anna, here is where I got the bells: http://www.poochie-pets.net/ If you search on YT for bells..you will find plenty of members here that have made their own. I have only started training Gordon with the bells.....at this point. I tell him potty when I try to get him to ring the bells. After he rings the bell.....and he only does this when I put a treat by it..(we just started) then I take him outside to his potty spot......if he acts like he is just wanting to play , I bring him back in and wait a little while and then repeat again. I have noticed that when I take him out and say potty......99% of the time the word potty makes him start sniffing the ground and he pottys. So that makes me thing he knows what potty is........I want him only to ring the bells for potty. When I take him outside to play or walk.......I don't get him to ring the bells.....I make him sit and put his leash on........and tell him Let's go , walk or play. If I ever get him trained to ring the bells for potty , since my house is large I plan to put bells on every outside door. Kalina........thanks, I have to say, there was times I thought I didn't have a life.......hehe. I'm lucky, I am home all day and have the time to work with him. My son and DIL have his sister and they both work all day......they are using the crate, x-pen and I go over there to check on her and walk her during the day........we celebrated the other day.......they started out using pads to completely cover the floor in the x-pen , she is now down to one pad and uses only that one pad. Sassy sounds like she is doing great.......good for her. Spike......I think, and I could be wrong......but any marker word works. Also, if I took Gordon out to potty and he just wanted to play......I brought him back in......wait awhile and then would tell him potty and take him back out. I take him out with a retrackable leash......he is NEVER aloud out without supervision or his leash. Since I am training him to walk nice......I use a regular leash. It makes his taining easier for me. Frick......I would try training with the bells , once they are complete trained with the bells......I would hang a set on a inside door or where I could see them , when you have your earphones on. Don't know if it will work, but I plan on using the bells on other doors, once Gordon is complete trained with the bells.

| I also take mine out every hour or two also. I also have 2 20 month olds here with me all day (one being my own and 1 that I provide daycare for.) So I take 3 doggies and 2 toddlers out every 1-2 hours. It sure is a task considering that all except my big dog need help down the stairs. LOL. Mine do not know how to tell me yet that they need to go potty. If only they could I could take them out only when needed. |

| Bells Thank you so much for giving the link for purchasing the bells. I've heard of using them but couldn't find them anywhere! I can't wait to try this when training Roxie! She's 4 months and currently doing puppy pads and outside. I'm trying to get her from puppy pads to 100% outside. Thanks again! |

| I think all your babies who ring bells or ring chimes are so smart! I tried training Buddy to go to the door to tell me but he never caught on! He just leaves it up to me and our schedule. Never had an accident so I guess it works for him. |

| I tried the bells...but unfortunately my toddler kept ringing them. LOL. Maybe when he is a little older I can retry that method. It was a VERY noisy few days. |
