| This is not working... Hello all. I am really at my wits end with Cali. The housebreaking is going so horribly wrong that I almost wanna give up. She is now 5 1/2 months and so far from being even partially potty trained. She absolutely will not go potty outside. I don't care if we stay outside the entire day. She will not do it. As soon as we get in the house and she's back in her kennel, she'll go. I know that everyone says that they shouldn't go in their crate and dogs have this instinct not to go in their small space, but Cali absolutely doesn't have this instinct at all. She will not use the pee pads, instead, she like to tear them to shreds and pee and poop on the floor. Then she walks all in it. So she always stinks. If I put her in the crate (and believe me, if it were any smaller space, she'd be outside of the stupid thing) she'll go in there. Now, I realize that housebreaking takes a lot longer if you are a working mom and all, but I feel like she's not moving forward at all. I wouldn't be so frustrated if she would have accidents in the house but still would go potty outside. My problem is she won't go outside if her life depended on it. I don't now how to get her to understand that it's not okay to lay in your own pee and poop. I wanna cry.

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Don't give up. Please. Some dogs take longer than others. You just need one or two successes outside. I would suggest that you feed and water your pup and then go on a long walk. Walk until she relieves herself. She's got to sometime! As soon as she does it, praise, praise, praise and give her her favorite treats. I've never pee pad trained, but the concept is the same. If you want them to go on the pad, be there when they do it right. Praise and treat. It works. Honest. Good luck.

| I'm sorry, I feel your frustration. Believe me she is not doing it to irritate you, she really has no clue as to what she is doing wrong. You need to try something entirely different because evidently what you are doing is not getting through to her. Does she sleep in a crate at night? and does she potty in it before morning? do you have her confined to a small area while you are at work, like an x pen with her bed and food and a pee pad? I know you said she shreds the pads, but you can get holders for them. Do you have her on a schedule? Dogs that are fed on a schedule will usually poop on schedule. I crate mine at night, first thing in the morning we go out and stay out until they pee and poop, usually takes around 5 minutes or less. They are fed a tablespoon of canned food at 5 PM and they will poop again then. I know it's hard, but try to make it as easy on yourself as possible by not giving her the run of the house and don't give up. |

I know she isn't doing it to make me mad, I actually feel bad that we can't get on the same page. Let me back up a bit and explain: When I first got Cali, she was partially pee pad trained. I have her crate inside a ex-pen, with her pad on the other side. There were no problems. Then, she broke her leg. The Dr.said to keep her pretty much immobile. We crated her during the day, only to find she'd potty in it before a couple of hours, so we quickly nixed that. I believe because she was so bored (no exercise) that she started ripping her pads. This would make her potty on the floor. Soon, the pads weren't serving any purpose (even with the pad holder, she figured out how to tear it all apart). She would pull all her bedding out into the mess, so daily I was washing blankets, pillows, soft toys, etc.... I thought maybe this meant she just needs to go outside to potty. So I started taking her out. Problem is, she won't go outside. she will wait until she gets back in her expen and potty on the floor...the most frustrating is that I KNOW HER SCHEDULE!!! I have no problem getting up at 2 and 5 in the morning. We do it all the time. But she won't go outside at all. Standing outside at that time in the morning for a half hour with no results can really give you a defeated feeling. She'll just sit there shivering, or try to play when I keep just saying "go potty Cali". We'd eventually come in the house and she'd use it in her ex pen. If she would just either go on the pad or outside - anywhere but on the floor, I'd be so happy. Also, I leave her food down from 7am to 6pm. I take up the water at 7pm. She is a good girl, I know she is totally confused. She listens for the most part. Just getting the signals on this pottying ain't working at all. I am going to order the washable pee pads and see what happens.

| I actually feel like I messed her up more by trying to take her outside to potty. Because at least she would still potty on top of the shredded pads, even though it would seep to the floor. now she will not pee on the pads, outside. Nowhere but on her floor inside her kennel.

| Aww, I'm sorry you're having such a difficult time. It does sound like the broken leg and going in her crate set her back a bit on the training. I switched to the washable pads and they are great! Maybe put a couple of them at one end of her x-pen and a bed (instead of the crate) on the other end. Good luck!

| Try putting the paper in a plastic litter pan for dogs.It should have the same feel has her crate.

| Please also keep in mind that most puppies bladders are not fully developed until they are at least 6 months old. They can not fully control it until this age. |

| Yes it sounds to me like the change in routine has really confused her. Have you thought of getting a different crate for her? Do you have her in one of those small travel crates. Maybe a different crate would make the difference. Do you live in a house with a back yard? Maybe an x pen out in the yard would do the trick. or fence a small area. My two little guys ar 10 weeks old and they are in the crate from 10PM to 7AM. One of them had diarrhea after her shots, and pottied in the crate a couple of nights, but other than that they hold it all night. First thing in the morning they pee and poop outside. I know it's hard, but I think eventually she'll get it figured out. Good luck. |

| Sorry you are having a difficult time...I will say that my boy was close to two years before being totally outdoor potty trained. He has a special little whimper that he gives me when he needs to go or if I need him to be on my schedule I'll ask him if he needs to do "potty out" (which means pee pee LOL ) or I'll ask him if he needs to do a "poopie out" (no need to explain that one LOL ) There are times when he does have accidents but I blame myself for those... ie;... not paying attention to his signals etc... I will have to say that my little boy is very spoiled when it comes to being cleaned up after a poo poo LMAO... if he has a little hanger on his hair he will just look up a me then back at his butt like saying "Mom get this off of me" !!!!!!!! LOL this still cracks me up after loving him for 5.5 years!!!!!!!!!!

| I'm sorry your having such a hard time. Seems I read somewhere on this form about putting a shower curtain under an x-pen. I think that was actually for someone who had carpet though. But would make for fast cleanup, put in the shower and wash it off. Venus had a hard time at first with shreading the pee pads. I duct taped them to the floor for well over a month! All 4 corners. When she'd try to pull the duct tape off, I'd say "no" very stern. I got crib pads off ebay, and cut them down to size, and zig zagged the edges. I think I paid like $6.99 for each crib pad, and got 4-6 pee pee pads out of each one. I also set the pee pads in a litter box, and she uses it there. If your interested, go to ebay and do a search for washable crib pads. Mine had some very minor flaws in them that I was able to work around. Venus is 9 months and about the time I think she's almost potty trained, I catch her again. I just washed another rug the other day, and put it back up for a while....Again. |

| I can understand My female Pricess I was determined to teach her. I slept on the couch and every 2hours I would let her out of her crate and I had large drapes from the hospital and I would walk her over to the drape and tell her go. After a while she started to pee on the drapes, I started to make them smaller and smaller until they were the size of a pee pad and she will go on that. She is a little over a year and not crated at all. Now my male he will go on the pee pad, he will go outside and he uses his crate. He will lay in his urine not matter what the size the crate is. We all develop at different rates so I figure that dogs do to..

| Well, yesterday I went to Walmart and purchased some washable crib pads. It had four different size pads (2 burp pads, 1 that is about the size of a pee pad, and then a large one that I will cut in half that is the size of 2 pee pads). I put that down last night and she immediately tried to tear it up. I just hid around the corner and watched, and after a while she realized it wasn't tearing, so she stopped! Not only that, but this morning when I came in the kitchen, she pee'd and pooped on it! So, I am happy today. Hopefully we will have success with this. Thanks all for the great advice. I'll keep y'all updated.
