Default Help!

Hi, I am new to the forum and the new mother of a 3 month old Yorkie/Maltese. Jordie will not go potty outside. I take him out constantly and stand outside for 10 to 15 minutes, he seems to view the outside as a mud, rock, and stick buffet! As soon as we come into the house he will potty right by the back door. I have put paper down, to save on mess, and have even tried taking the paper outside. Help please!

Hi, welcome to YT!

jordie is still very much a baby and won't pick up on the house training for another couple weeks. However you still want to train him to go outside whenever you can. When i got morgan she didn't really want to potty outside either. However i made her go where i wanted her to go and didn't leave that spot until she went. Luckily tho, it was summer and i couple stand out there as long as i wanted without getting cold. here is a link to my breeders site of puppy care information.

http://sylvanyorkies.com/puppycare.htm

If you scroll down at 1/3 of the way you will see a bit on housetraining. This is what i did with morgan and it worked. She now goes potty only outside. Don't worry about him spending alot of time in his crate. puppies usually sleep alot anyway and this is what he'd be doing inside or outside the crate.

Put him in either a play pen or a doggie fenced area attached to a wire crate (leaving the crate on the outside of the fenced area) attach a water bottle on the fence, give him toys and puppy kong and nylabone, and a wee-wee pad at the opposite end of the crate. (never ever run of the house) Take him out about every hour and walk him around the yard, play with him, roll a ball, anything to stimulate him. When he goes potty, praise him and say good potty, in your sweetest voice. Even when he goes on the pad. Mine were trained this way and now are trained to go outside or on the wee-wee pad if I'm not home. I love this training method for the small guys and of course for me because I don't relish going outside in the rain and they don't either. Also when we travel and stay at a hotel/motel, I don't like going out last at night or early morning, and they use the pad.

Default What do you think?

Last night while at work my husband tried something new. He took Jordie out for 10 minutes at a time every 30 minutes, (it was snowing and 13 degrees). If Jordie did not potty while out he put him in his kennel. He repeated this for 3 hours until I got home. As soon as I got home I took Jordie out and stood for about 5 minutes and YEAH, we had a poop outside! When I brought him in my husband and I both praised him for about 10 minutes and gave him a small treat. Do you think it is cruel to put him in the kennel until he goes?

I dont think it is cruel at all. You have to limit his space untill he goes. It sounds like you are your Husband are doing a great job. Keep it up

Thats exactly what we did for the first few days to help Scruffy learn that outside is where we go potty. I did that consistently for about 2 days, and then I brought him outside every 20 or so minutes whenever he was awake, and now we are up to every 30 minutes outside whenever he is awake. My pup is almost 11 weeks old, and (KNOCK ON WOOD) he doesn't have ANY accidents if I am consistent. The only 2 accidents that he has had in the last 10 days was #1 I was in the middle of getting my supper in the oven, and it had passed that 1/2 hour mark and I didn't get him outside in time, and the second time, I asked my 10 year old son to WATCH him while I run upstairs to get a cup of coffee (literally 2 minutes) and when I came down, he had let Scruffy have the run of the laundry room, while he was zoned in on his gameboy SO therefore that was my fault also.
Good luck, and NO I do not think that is cruel AT ALL. I would NOT have been as far along on potty training as I am had it not been for crate time.
It is now cold again (high of 10 today) and so outside play is now limited, but he now goes on command.........I say Scruffy Potty, and we are back in the house WITHIN one minute (he HAS to sniff a little too

Red face

Welcome

When i got Harvey he was 8 weeks old and it was just coming upto summer time here. We used to take him out everytime he woke, ate or generally every 2-3 hours. We had to wait until he did go (sometimes it was ages and ages).
I also had wee wee pads around, but he had free run downstairs and we only had a few accidents luckily. He used to go outside on his own and sunbathe - bless him!
At night he sleeps in his crate in the kitchen - it is too big for him so one half is his bed and half a wee wee pad is in the other side, (I know you are not supposed to do this but i tried it and it works for me - never anything on pad).
He is 91/2 months old now and we still take him out about every 3-4 hrs and tell him to do wee wee or poo poo, and he does do it, he sometimes takes his time sniffing around etc.

All i can advise is you be consistant and stay out with him until he does his business! Hope it doesnt take too long for you to get him trained.

the crate is not cruel at all. A crate is like their den. Jordie will learn to love that crate and he'll go in it whenever he wants later to nap/relax/get away from everyone else. Putting him in his kennel if he hasn't gone potty will give him nothing else to think about and then remember 'oh yeah i have to pee' and then he'll go next time you take him outside

No, I don't think that is cruel at all.

Here are few other things to try to speed up the process:
1) You may need to stay outside with him for longer than 10 -15 minutes at first.
2) Take your treats with you when you go outside so that you can reward him immediately for pottying appropriately. If you wait until you go back in the house, you run the risk that he doesn't connect the treat with the pottying.
3) Leave some of his old poop outside. Take him to smell the poop as soon as you take him outside. Dogs often stimulate themselves to defecate by smelling old excrement.

Good luck! You'll get there.
