As soon as I got home I took Jordie out and stood for about 5 minutes and YEAH, we had a poop outside! When I brought him in my husband and I both praised him for about 10 minutes and gave him a small treat. Do you think it is cruel to put him in the kennel until he goes?

the crate is not cruel at all. A crate is like their den. Jordie will learn to love that crate and he'll go in it whenever he wants later to nap/relax/get away from everyone else. Putting him in his kennel if he hasn't gone potty will give him nothing else to think about and then remember 'oh yeah i have to pee' and then he'll go next time you take him outside
