| New Yorkie Owner Shasta will be 10 weeks on Sunday, I got her when she was 7 weeks old. The first week she did well in the kennel, getting up 2-3 times to piddle but would go back in the kennel with minimal whining. Last week she must have realized that she can bark, and that is all she does at night in her kennel. She will go to sleep for a couple of hours, then after I take her out to piddle and put her back in the kennel she barks, constantly. You would think that she would do this until she got tired, but that is not the case. I have had to move her from my room to the living room and can hear her barking continuously. I have tried everything that everyone has told me-heating pad, water bottle, a shirt of mine, toy, a piece of blanket that she had when she was with mom, etc... They say now that I just have to wait it out... are there any other suggestions that I might be able to try? |

| Have you tried an alarm clock that ticks....the wind up kind they seem to like the ticking. Some puppies think it's mom's heart beat, wrap it up with the heating pad and with the blanket from mom. good luck.I am a first time yorkie owner also. |

| Have you tried this??? Just kidding I've never crated mine so I can't offer much advice there. I did hear somewhere that when puppies are taken away from their mommies too soon it isn't good. Maybe the ticking clock that meemer1 suggested would remind her of moms heartbeat. Good luck with you baby

| Everyone told me about the ticking clock but I was thinking that would be too simple of an idea (that is what I get for thinking)... I went out and bought a clock last night and I think that it worked-or I was just too tired and slept through the barking. I am going to put her in my room tonight and see if it really is working. Thanks for the suggestions and replies. I am sure that this won't be my last request (or plead) for help. Enjoy the weekend!!! |

| Wish I could help...I tried covering the crate with a blanket, getting a ticking clock, putting a piece of my clothing in the crate, putting stuffed animals, putting a blanket inside the crate, telling the dog NO, taping on the crate and spraying water in the face. None of these worked for me. A dog behaviorist told me you should never talk to them when they are in the crate. If the dog barks, move the crate in another room and ignore him/her. I tried this for two days, put the dog in the garage in the crate. It didn't help. I now have Stomper on his own bed in the living room. He has been doing well. Well...until last night. He started barking again! Good luck!

| What i did when mine were young, was i put the crate in bed with me and put my finger through the bars..the pups would snuggle up to my finger and sleep. After a week i'd set the crate on the floor by my bed. Then the next week they went to their own room where they sleep...all but my oldest she still bed hops... |

| It sounds like we have all heard (and may have tried) all the same things... what I have noticed is that Shasta sleeps better at night on Saturday and Sunday nights, most likely that is when I am around the most and she spends less time in the kennel. I have put her in another room and check on her a couple of times a night, I do have the wind up clock next to her, it does seem to have calmed her down a bit. She does get a bit upset at night if she has piddled or pooed in her kennel, like last night (tried a different pup food from the vet). As for Shasta sleeping with me... no, not until she is potty trained, then she will be more than welcome! Dad always told me to be careful I might end up with a daughter like me... little did he know ;-) Thanks again! |

| bijoux is in a pup playpen in our bathroom she is fine until my husband gets up for work, then she starts, we started turning the bath vent/fan on when he leaves, it has worked for us... love the play pen because she can go on her puppy pads, and still have a bed to sleep in, and room for her water, and a toy or 2..

| I've read that if the pup continue's to bark for lengths of periods you can take a small object (like a fork or spoon) and tap it on the edge of the kennel while saying "no bark"... The worst I've heard is to remove the pup from the kennel while it's barking. Good luck.. Also, I love that thumbnail picture Bentley and Bitsy's Mom

| New Yorkie mom I thought I was having trouble 'til I found this site! LOL, Seriously, my Brodee is 12 weeks and he settled into a routine (@ night) after the first week (we brought him home when he was 7 weeks) . He now sleeps in his crate from 10:00 pm until 7 or 8 am with no accidents and no crying or barking at all . Occassionally, in the morning he will wake us up, but it's very expected. We are thrilled with that part, but I have to watch him like a hawk or he will go wherever he is during the day. I keep him crated when he is not being attended too and I bought a yard stake so I can leave him inside our fenced yard and right outside our french doors at times that I don't want to "stick him back in the crate". He has become my baby and I take him everywhere with me (got kicked out of Target last week ) I just want to do this right and with my home based business, I am able to be with him, but I don't know if it is his age or breed, but I don't think he's getting it yet. And I can't leave him out late afternoons on, because there is a huge owl swooping around our yard while he's out. I would appreciate any help, I have read a lot and am really trying but, I'm just not sure what else to do. He is already 4 1/2 lbs at 3 months.....when do they reach maturity in weight? Somewhere I read to calculate their weight by two at 12 weeks to estimate maturity weight, has any one else heard that? I never thought I would spend this much on a pet, time, money, effort and love, but I wouldn't have it any other way now! Brodeesmom aka/ Treasuredimpressionsbysherri.net |
