| playing or fighting? i have a year old male yorkie and a 3 month old female yorkie. they are both playful so i thought that were a perfect match, but now im not sure. whenever i put them together, things seems to be alright [they would chase each other, steal each others toys, normal right?] , but then it would escalate to biting each other [i guess not too hard cuz they never break skin], and my oldest yorkie [who is 7 ibs] will know my lil yorkie [who is not eve 2 lbs yet!]. my lil one would cry, but then gets back up and bite him again! its a whole cycle of this. they do growl and bark at each other which makes me think that they're angry at one another or are they just play?? can anyone help me determine if i should step in and dicipline my dogs or will this settle on its on? thanx for any replies (: |

| Gus (5 pounds) plays with a Maltese (9 pounds). They growl, bark, pin each other down. Occasionally Gus will yelp when it gets too rough but then he is right back in there. People always think they are fighting but they are just playing. I would supervise them until your female is bigger and you are more confident they are only playing but I think if she was really getting hurt she would not be eager to keep joining in. When they are getting too crazy, I would (and do) step in and break it up for a little while. What does your male do when she cries out? Does he let up?

| Lucky, my male yorkie would just pause a lil then goes back to "play biting". OR Laila, my lil girl yorkie would cry then go back to bite Lucky again. i assume she's not hurt because she's always ready to chase and bite Lucky. thanx for the reply! i just needed some reassurance. i always break things up when things get a bit too rough, but they always go back to biting and wrestling. im not ready to leave Laila all alone with Lucky as of yet. she's waaayyy too small! well, thank you for the reply |

| I agree with Erin. I have watched my 3#er get really mad at a 7#er when they are play fighting but I will tell you what, she is right back in there after she has thrown her little fit. I think the part you have to watch is if they are going for the back of the neck otherwise I think they work it out between themselves.

| LivingDustMops - Let them be. Have you ever watched a litter of puppies play. The chase, jump, bite, whine, cry, and do it over and over again all day long. I had a cat and dog that would go at it. And the cat would makes noises like he was being absolutely killed by the dog. They would literally fall down the stairs entangled in one another. Occasionally, I would try to save the cat's life by putting him up on the back of the sofa or a table or something - but the minute the dog walked beneath him, the cat would jump on the dog's back and away they'd go at it again. They really were playing - and they acted this way for 10 years. I'd even find pieces of fur and hair all over when they finished. Oh - what fun they were having! You can tell when one animal is really being hurt. And, the fact that they both choose to engage in this behavior means they must be enjoying it. If one weren't, he'd be out of there......and not going back! Carol Jean |

| Carol Jean - I am very experienced in dogs - most anyone in rescue would have to be. I have 10 rescued Yorkies of my own now and over the last 4 1/2 years had over 25 rescues come through my house. I also grew up in a home with dogs and cats. My father raised labs so I know how puppies play. I am well versed in what is play fighting and what is real fighting with Yorkies. I said watch to see if they are going after the neck. Many members don't know the difference between real fighting and play fighting and if someone is worried about the difference this would be an indicator of the difference. I also have 2 males that start out playing and it quickly escalates to a full blown dog fight - have you ever seen what a pack will do when a fight breaks out? My gang play fight all day long and I do not step in until a full blown fight erupts. From your post you act like I told her to break them up. IMHO - neither Erin nor I said that but to watch and supervise as I agreed with Erin.

| LivingDustMops - Guess I'm doing my fair share of apologizing to you. I was admolished by the "Principal's Office" for being unthoughtful to you. And- I'm not sure which post they are referring to. Anyway - I'm sorry. If it was this post, I did make a mistake. When I posted to you on this thread - I was thinking that you were the one that started this thread and my post was a response to the original (first) post by Yorkie3 .... it was not a response to your post. I agree with what you said. Sorry again - Carol Jean |
