Have you ever watched a litter of puppies play. The chase, jump, bite, whine, cry, and do it over and over again all day long.

I had a cat and dog that would go at it. And the cat would makes noises like he was being absolutely killed by the dog. They would literally fall down the stairs entangled in one another. Occasionally, I would try to save the cat's life by putting him up on the back of the sofa or a table or something - but the minute the dog walked beneath him, the cat would jump on the dog's back and away they'd go at it again. They really were playing - and they acted this way for 10 years. I'd even find pieces of fur and hair all over when they finished. Oh - what fun they were having!

You can tell when one animal is really being hurt. And, the fact that they both choose to engage in this behavior means they must be enjoying it. If one weren't, he'd be out of there......and not going back!
