Scratching at door OK...things are going good with the potty training outside. All this week when I've taken Georgia to go out I put her little paws up on the door. Well a few days ago she started running to the door and scratching at it like showed her. We go out and she does her thing. Well yesterday and today she's been scratching at the door like every 15 minutes. I know she just wants to go out to play in the yard which she loves. What do I do...bring her out every 15 minutes even though I know she doesnt' have to go and just wants to play...or do i ignore her and wait an appropriate amount of time until I know she probably has to go again. Any advice is appreciated!!

I would take her out as often as she asks for right now, to reinforce the behavior. Maybe you could fence an area for her so you don't have to go out with her each time. Get two X pens and position them around the door, so you can just open the door and let her out. I just believe at this point, if you ignore her, she will quit asking you altogether. Once you know that she is completely trained, you can start distracting her if you are sure that she doesn't have to go.. I had a yorkie that would ask to go out just so she could ocme back in and get a treat. then she got so she would just ask for the treat. LOL BTW How old is she? Just curious as to where mine are in the great potty training race. Mine do scratch to come in, so I think they will be able to make the connection on going out too.

Georgia is 14 weeks old today and I must tell you isn't a yorkie but a shih tzu! She's tiny at 2lbs 2oz. I wish I could just let her out on her own but we have several granite steps and she can't go down yet. I am thinking about putting up and area with some sort of fencing though...that way I'm not chasing her around the whole yard while she pee's or doesn't and eats everything in site!! Just take her out pop her in her fenced in area and no play. Thank you everyone for your replies it's appreciated.

My pup likes to go in and out constantly - so - for the most part, if he wants out, I let him out. And, if he wants in, I just let him in. I don't think this is too much of a problem. He wears a harness attached to a long clothesline rope when he's outside. So - I just slip his harness on and let him out - and take it off when he comes in. This really only takes a second and isn't much work for me. Part of his wanting to go outside is that I think he is just so excited about this great "summer weather" we're starting to have. And - even though he goes out often - he still pee's every time. Maybe not much - but he pees. Carol Jean
