| biting and potty training problems...need advice from experienced owners My baby girls is 4 months old, and I love her more than anything...but we have 2 problems: 1) potty training. We live in an area that has harsh winters. We brought her home in January when it was very cold and snowy...so potty training was hard when it was sooooo nasty outside. However it is now getting nicer and I was expecting some improvement. The opposite is happening. Sydney is VERY stubborn and strong willed. We have tried praise, treats, and even a punishment system...but she still wants to go on the floor. We take her outside, give her plenty of time to go (she doesn't) and then the second we get back in she is peeing on the floor. Help! 2) agressiveness. Sydney has a very strong adversion to personal care...aka...cutting nails, haircuts, her temperature being taken at the vet...etc. If she is being forced to do something she doesn't like, she bites. I've had to muzzel her to get her nails trimmed, and she is only a baby. I am worried this will get worse with age. This is really becoming somewhat of a problem and I am afraid she will bite the vet. What can I do? |

| For her aggressiveness , I would not worry too much . She react exactly as mine does when she was her age . Mine settle very well. Never bite the vet . Sometimes , it takes time to get used to grooming . I don't know but maybe it is too cold outside for her . |

| I don't know much about the agressiveness because Jasmine is very calm, she doesn't even bark that much. As far as the potting training goes: I couldn't take Jasmine outside either because of the cold weather. We paper trained her.(the pee pads) All of us make a huge deal out of it when she goes on the pads. We give her a treat and pet her and tell her good girl. She loves the attention. When she doesn't go on the pad, we tell her NO and put her on the pad. You have to be very consistant. That is the most important thing. You can't keep going back and forth. Pick a praise that works and a punishment that works and stick to it everytime. Don't forget that you are dealing with a terrior breed. I have heard from so many Yorkie owners that they are never really trained. Jasmine is 9 months and at least once a day she goes on the carpet. Your baby is only 4 months. Don't expect real results until she is at least 6 months. I got this advice so many times and it is definately true. Good Luck! |

| For the training you should try the wee wee pad training. SInce the weather is so harsh and changes contsantly, I really dont think its a good idea for her to be taught to go outside. The wee wee pad training is quite simple. THe pad is the designated area for her to do her thing. WHen she has an accident, you bring her to the wee wee pad(located INSIDE wherever you want it to be)and say the word you are training her with. WHen she does learn to go on the pad, praise her and say good girl/ boy. She will love the praise and continue to do it there. I believe this should help with the training problem, and with the agressiveness, it will eventually go away with time. -Alexandra and Tikki Last edited by tikkismommy; 04-03-2005 at 09:39 AM. |

| I heard a couple of great tips for puppies with an adversion to grooming: When you're holding your puppy, begin to touch and stroke their paws so that they get used to having their paws touch. This will eventually help with cutting their nails. Take an electric shaver (with the cover on) and turn it on with the puppy in the room. Do this until your puppy gets used to the noise, and then try to turn it on near the puppy. Gradually get the the point where you can run the shaver (again, with cover on) over your dog's body. This will help them get used to the sound and the feeling of the vibration that comes with grooming. |

| I have a 3 month old and I talked to the trainer about potty training inside also. I live in Colorado, and the weather can be very unpredictable so sometimes I need Starsky to go inside. Plus we take him on trips and he may need to go in a hotel. The trainer said to limit him his place to play and run and leave his pee pad there. Once he has figured how to potty on the pad, open up his running space a little more, and then gradually more. I am sure we still have a long way to go, but I feel like he is improving. As far as the aggressiveness, make sure she knows who is boss. Bark at her loud if you have to. I've done that and he will usually kiss me!! Weird huh? It's like he says, "I'm sorry!" Good luck!!

| Your fur baby is still VERY young and potty training might take some time. More and more posts will have the word "patience" typed in, LOL. It should be typed in stone. You have been given great advise. I too like the puppy pads and any aggressive behavior ignore, stop giving her attention. Act upon the good things...She will see that nobody wants to be with her when she acts aggressive. As mentioned, you are to be the alpha and bark loud at her too. It startles them and they usually go into a submissive posture. They only want to please us...Good luck

| Thanks Thanks for the great advice everybody. Since I first posted this, she is doing much better about going potty outside. She still doesn't know how to tell us she needs to go...but we are working on that. The agressiveness however is still the same. I haven't had the chance to try barking at her yet, though. She needs her nails clipped soon...so I'll try it then if she starts to bite. |

| a quick easy tip that helped me when we were potty training... Dont give the treat until they do their business,,, then give it when you enter the house,, I would take the treats outside and if he peed I would give him a treat,,, so he started to catch onto that,, then we'd go inside and he'd finish peeing or then GO POOP!! I was like " what is this abt"!! So then I started waiting until he went and then give the treat when we went back in the house... It worked.

| Maggie gets her feet wiped off with a towel, regardless if they are dirty or not, when she comes back inside the house. She knows thats the routine before she gets to do anything else. Since we do that so much, when it comes to nail grooming, it's a snap. |
