Does any one use a dog door? I recently got a Yorkie, house training is going fairly well. He goes outside when we are home. When we are at work we have him gated in a bathroom and he uses pee pads if he has to go. Does anyone use a dog door and let them go out on their own? This would seem to be a more convient way of letting the dog outside, obviously the area has to be fenced in (Yorkie tight). I have an area that I could put a dog door which would give him access to a very small area of yard to use, but would be large enough to accomadate him. Has anyone had any luck with this? I know several dog owners that do this but I have not seen anyone talk about this for their Yorkie on these forums. I wanted to see if I was missing something or maybe Yorkie's won't go out a dog door or something else I have not thought of. thanks for any feedback!

Hi, we taught mitzy to go through a catflap that we have. We started teaching her at about 12 weeks old.....she wouldnt go out at first, we put her in and out of it a few times before we shut her in the house, ran outside and called her.....she eventually got the hang of it........she is 9mths old now, she uses it more if she is left on her own, or she sits at the door with her head sticking out, looking around. It is very handy, cos if i need to go out, even though i always make sure she has peed first, i know if she needs to go, she can get out. We have 6ft fencing all round our garden, although i do worry sometimes if someone would try to pinch her. She is never left for long periods anyway, but the worry is always there. We also have to watch out for foxes (have seen them walking along our fences at night) but she does sleep with us and cant get out unless we take her downstairs.

thanks for the reply. I heard today from a Vet that he sees several Yorkies that have been injured by predator birds!! He indicated that several times people think these little dogs get stolen and they are actually being carried away by a bird. What a terrible thought! Anyway I now have some reservations on incorporating a dog door. I would however have a great set up that would allow him to go out to a small area of yard and I could close the door to this "deck room" so he would not have access to the entire house. What does everyone think?? Is this a huge risk?? ps. I live in the city so predators would less than in a rural area

I would just never chance it. I need to know where my baby is at all times. which is not a problem since she follows me around and whines at my door if i dont let her in.

I have an 8' tall 8' by 40' run out my back door for mine. Its done with privacy fence and buried mesh so nothing gets in or out. No gate either. We have many predator birds in my area so up to this point I have no doggy door. Its also against the law to harm any of these birds. So I came up with a solution. We are going to cover the entire run with mesh so nothing can swoop in. If it gets tangled in there it shouldn't really harm them. Then I am going to put a doggy door in their grooming room so they can go in and out when ever they want and still be safe. Hopefully it will work.
