how big is she? it depends on the size really. When Brandy was about a pound she needed to be put out at least every half an hour or she'd have an accident during the day. At night as soon she she woke up she would need to go to the bathroom, about every 3 hours. Her bladder is only so big, so that is why she goes. If you crate train them, vice letting them run around free, they tend to learn faster. But you can not let them think it is okay to go in their crate. Pet store dogs learn this and are harder to train.
Your dog is finished growing, so it's now a matter of you trying to make a schedual for her, so she can know when to expect to go out. I always stay up late, so I let her out last thing at night, then my husband lets the dogs first thing in the morning. If they get used to a routine it is better for them. Brandy needs to go out every 2 hours and she is about 4 lbs. If your dog is on the smaller side, I would try to let her out more frequently during the day, if it is bigger, then it can hold it a little longer.
I hope this helps

are you giving her a treat whenever she does hold it and go outside? Treats have worked really well for brandy. Have you tried poochie bells? those will helpd when you're home.

I'm not saying this is the right way or not, but this is what we do with Maggie. She is 11 months old and can hold it all day. We normally go outside three times a day, however sometimes we may be gone all day. It took a while for her bladder muscles to get strong, but with time it happened. We started the training process by just adding a few minutes extra a day between outside business. Did take very long at all for her to catch on. We didn't start this type of training until she was six months old. They say between six and 12 months old is when they finally get their bladder muscles under control.

I have heard that letting them hold it for too long gives them bladder problems though. Have you heard the same thing?

It could be true, it you DO let them hold it too long. That is why I said to add just a FEW minutes each day between outings.

Don't you need to pee every 3-5 hours? Unless there is some kind of medical problem, I'd say that's normal. I don't expect Loki to ever be able to hold it 9 hours while I'm at work. I let him out at about 10:00 and we wake up around 6. Sometimes he sleeps through the night but I'd say twice a week he rings his bells to go out in the middle of the night. As long as he pees outside, I'm OK with that. We took him out in the middle of the night almost every night until he was at least a year old. I wake up to use the bathroom too, so I figure why can't he?

Do you take water up a couple hours before bedtime? How much water does she drink all day? Does she have water in her crate? Have you been to the vet to rule out kindey problems, bladder infection, etc. We had blood tests run on Loki (when he was neutered) to figure out why he peed so much. So far we can only determine that he drinks a lot of water. Poochie Bells and small amounts of water at a time seem to work for us.

I don't leave water in Loki's crate because he would drink it all 2 minutes after I put him in there so there is no point. Plus, then he has to pee 20 mins later. Do you crate her? Loki will hold it about 5 hours in his crate, possibly longer but I've never tried. We don't leave him home alone uncrated, but my guess is he'd hold it 10 mins after ringing his bells and he'd pee on the carpet.

When we're home, Loki goes out every 45 mins to 2 hours, depending on how much water he drinks. 3-5 hours sounds normal to me?

As for getting sleep, is she pee pad trained as well? I found this to be a godsend because I just put pee pads down in the bathroom and when they have to go in the middle of the night they just climb down the steps off the bed and go on the pads. I never wake up. I even get to sleep in on the weekends this way. I still take them out right when I get up.

Just so you know, a puppy does not gain full bladder control until they are about a year old. For smaller breeds, you can expect full control around 18 months.

This is what we do for Missy and she goes all night without going outside during the night anymore.

She gets her supper and LAST water at 4 p.m. (this is per the trainer to help with housebreaking).

At 9:00 p.m. she gets an ice cube in her bowl. This is to help freeze up everything inside.

Missy also sleeps in a crate all night with a big towel over it.

Maybe this might help you.

I agree. I have read many articles/books that taking up food/water after dogs have received an adequate amount for the day will help with the potty training. There is always someone home here so we do let them out every couple of hours to do their thing. Best of luck to you. Please be patient, I am sure things will work out.

i'm also of the opinion that i have to go every 3-5 hrs too. i don't expect more of my little puppy than i can handle myself. bunjee is nearly 5 months old and about 5.5 lbs. he can't hold it through the entire night either without having get up at least once to go. but he's trained enough now to get up, walk over to the potty pad in the kitchen to pee, then either go back to the bed in the kitchen, or actually walk back to the bedroom and into the crate to sleep.

is allowing her to go potty herself an option? either using a potty pad or a doggie door to go outside? perhaps then you can go your sleep won't be disturbed.

If you really want to teach your pet to go outside this is a bad move in my opinion, because your telling it its okay to go inside then changing the rules later down the line, unless your okay with her going in your house?Let me know if you want more info on this,I know some good tips.I personally would rather sacrafice alittle now and teach my dog to just go outside...
