| New Yorkie Owner!!! Need advice I am brand new to the site, and also a brand new Yorkie owner. I purchased Calvin last Thursday as a 30th birthday present for my wife, and indirectly a present for my 3 year old daughter too haha. He is 10 weeks old, and just a little guy. They expect him to be near 5 lbs. Now I realize the questions I am going to ask are all answered in other threads, but I was getting confused when reading the threads, and I was getting some contradicting info, and I was hoping I could get some advice in my own thread so its easier for me to follow. I am just looking for training advice. He currently does not eat very much, therefore he does not go to the bathroom often. We try to take him out every 45 min - 1 hour, and we always bring him to the same area of the yard. He has yet to go potty while outside, and usually wants to run around the yard instead of stay in the area we are designating as his. Are we doing the right thing? Should I buy an exercise pen for outside that I can drop him in, so hell be forced to stay in that area? Also, currently at night we put him in a cage. Based on other recommendations I covered him four sides of the cage with a blanket and left the front open. I keep the cage in our downstairs family room with the door open during the day, since its where we hang out. He never goes in the cage on his own, ever. All he wants to do is cuddle or play. (I am not complaining) We had the cage in our bedroom the first night but he was yelping too much so we moved it to the upstairs family room. He yelped most of the night and we dealt with it. The second night he did it again, and I needed sleep, so I moved the cage downstairs where we can not hear him. What would you guys recommend we do at night with him? He is so great, and we just want to do this right! I just wish he was housebroken now so he could sleep in our bed! Thank you in advance for any help. I attached a photo of our little guy! |

| He is a little cutie. I don't know as much as many others on here but I thought I would try to help as much as I can with some questions. I have learned that a Yorkie pup should stay with his Mom till at least 12 weeks so the reason he may be howling is he misses his mom and siblings. He is so very young and this is all so new to him. New house, new smells, new rules, new bed to sleep in without mom and siblings. It will take time for him to adjust to his new home with you and you just need to be patient and loving as I sure you must be with him. As far as the potty in one area outside goes it might be good to take him out on a leash and go to the one area where you want him to go and tell him to potty here. If you did want to it might be a good idea to get a pen to put him in until he learns that this is where you want him to potty. I hope any of this helps you out and I hope there will be others who can give you much better advice than I am able to. Last edited by Silver Lace; 08-31-2015 at 01:01 PM. |

| I appreciate the advice! The problem with a leash is the collar and harness I got are both too big! Both xx small and they still dont fit haha. It doesnt appear they make a smaller size... |

| I always make their sleeping place nice and snug with one of my t-shirts that I've worn so it'll have my scent on it. It helps to keep them quiet. And lots of patience they're very demanding but worth it. Enjoy! |

| When I first bought Mac home I got him a cat harness it was small enough. He was about 1.5 he now weighs five. Like silver lace commented you are going need a lot of patience and time you will be rewarded.

| Okay here is an update. I found a small enough harness so we are good there. We did have him in a crate overnight and a few hours during the day that was about 2ft x 3ft, maybe a tad larger. He seemed to hate it so i thought maybe it was too big and he didnt feel safe. Since them we have been keeping him in his much smaller carrier, and he doesnt seem to like that either. I want to pick one and stick to it... which is the better choice for him? He seems to hate going into either, and I get awoken every morning about 10 minutes before I normally get up, to his yelps. Also, as far as the potty training goes he seems to never poop! I know of four times in the week weve owned him that hes pooped. Twice in the house, twice outside. He never goes when I take him out to poop. The two times hes gone outside, I take him out, he wanders or paws at me to pick him up, and I eventually take him back in... and then i catch him about to poop in the house withing 5 min of us going out! Any suggestions? Putting him in a cage really breaks my heart. My father is Yorkie / Maltese mix and they bought a child pack and play for her. At night they set her carrier in the pack and play with the door open so she can go in it or walk around the pack and play if she wants, and she seems to like it. Is this a good option? As far as outside training how do you feel about an exercise pen I drop him and and leave him until he poops? |

YT 500 Club Member | Puppies are really hard. Please get on sometime of schedule. Puppies need a routine. Play with him with his crate. Throw toys or treats in the crate he will go inside & get them. Praise, praise, him when he goes in. After a few fun games of chasing the treats try and close the door for just a few seconds. When he doesn't cry treat @ praise again and again. I put my little ones crate on my bed when we slept. I couldn't stand to here him cry. He did great, was quite and slept. It was easier for me to do it this way to know when he needed to go potty After he grew a bit about 4 weeks he sleeps in the bed. It's so nice. We still @ 8 months go out for midnight potty. Lots of patience and big aspirins and it's all worth it 😃

| We bought a zip up nylon carrier for Barney when he was a puppy. I would put it beside me in the bed and when he would whine, I would put my hand up beside the mesh. This really helped him to sleep through the night. When he was big enough that I wasn't worried about him falling off the bed, I quit using it. I got a cheap Wal-Mart bag similar to this one. Amazon As far as the pooping goes, are you sure he isn't eating it? Sometimes they do this. He's very young to have him outside. I wouldn't do this until he's fully vaccinated. I would put him in a play pen during the day time hours and put his food and play stuff on one side and potty pads on the other. I took Barney outside when he was about that age and he got giardia. It took forever for him to get over it. http://www.amazon.com/IRIS-Indoor-Outdoor-Plastic-... Congrats on your new puppy and welcome to YT. I can't wait to hear all the fun stories about your cute new baby.

| Thank you for the help. That was my next question. I put him in his carrier at night right now. Is it too small? That is also what I keep him in during the day for 5 hours or so when i go to work. Should I go back to the cage? It just seems like, to me, the small carrier isnt good.. but I am not a dog. I like the idea my dad has with the pack and play and setting the carrier in it with the door open and putting pee pads down, but I really dont want to encourage him to go when he in the house, at all. I want him to have the impression you ONLY go outside. |

| Barney did fine in the small carrier at night, but I only did this with him for a few weeks until I felt he wouldn't try to jump off the bed. And I put him in my bed in the carrier. We called it his sleeping bag. He was much more comfortable being able to sleep with us than he was in an big open pen in the other room. As for peeing outside, I totally get this. My husband and I felt this way too. Maybe try keeping him in a confined area until he's fully vaccinated. Good luck with everything. Look forward to seeing more pictures. He's cute!

| The pack and play is a good idea. Or an ex pen. Try giving him a tshirt of yours or your wife's. He's still a baby so he's missing having litter mates/mama. Potty training is tough. Consistency is key. Every time he goes potty in the house take him directly outside and say something like "potty outside" let him down and then take him back inside and put him in his crate or ex pen. Leave him there for about 15 minutes then take him back outside and say "potty outside" . It is time consuming but if you are consistent and don't give in he will get it eventually. While inside if you cannot keep eyes on him at all times confine him to the ex pen or crate. Some suggest having him tethered to whomever is with him at the time. Keeping him confined keeps him from marking up the whole house and also will keep him safe. This way u know he's not chewing/swallowing something he shouldn't. They r quick little buggers! One last thing I want to mention is to be sure he is eating a few times through the day. Hypoglycemia is common in these tiny pups. If u notice extreme lethargy, swipe some Karo syrup on his gums and get him to the vet. Be sure to have a regular vet as well as an emergency vet on hand. As he gets older and gets better with the potty business you can slowly give him more freedom in your home! After all that.....he is absolutely adorable! Congrats!
