| 13month old ...please advise [B]I have been given a Yorkie by my daughter as a companion after losing my husband recently. He is a cutie, and 13 months old, housetrained, innoculated etc .He only arrived 24 hours ago,and is obviously confused and frightened. We have treated him with kid gloves,so as to try and assure him we dont, intend him any harm.As my Granddaughter works for a pet supplies firm,I have been given every item he may need for his comfort and play. However,he wont settle and wouldnt give in to tiredness, falling asleep standing up...but alert again at every movement I made during the night.I cant go near him without him growling and snapping at me...so unable to pick him up at all.I do hope this will not continue as I have young Great Grandchildren. Can anybody give me advice please? |

I am so very sorry about the loss of your husband, how devastating for you - and I hope in time your new little boy will help to mend your heart. May I ask - do you know anything about his background? Has your daughter given you any information about the why's and wherefore's of having to be re-homed at that age? 24 hours is still a very short time....the little mite's probably very confused and scared. I understand your fear and frustration, and look forward to getting to know you Sally + Harry x

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Do you know anything of his history? For example is he used to be crated? The food he was one? Is he used to walking outside on lead? Once you know these things, try to create a similar environment for him. You have a bit of dilemma here. But as I'm sure you have sussed out, he is very scared right now and it is going to take some time for him to adjust. Has he accepted food from you yet? What have you done about walking him? Okay first item of business is to get him to eat. Try just placing a saucer down with his known food, and you keep distant from the food. Call him for supper or breakfast. See if he will come and eat the food with you in the room. If no, then leave the room, and let him stay in the room you intend to feed him in. Also if you like to cook, I'd try cooking up some lovely smelling dishes. Fish, roasted meats, etc. See if he will come into the kitchen to investigate those smells If he doesn't eat the food, pick it up, cover it, wait for another hour, put it down again, and call him for supper or breakfast. If he will eat from his dish, then next is to try to get him to take food from you. You can start by sitting on the floor, and use a squeaky toy, then if he runs into investigate. Call him, and roll a treat along the floor towards him. Enticing foods - kibble sprinkled with a little Parmesan cheese. Carrots, chicken breast, lamb, roast beef, etc. If he is outside potty trained you will need to take him out. When he growls a firm NO or Bad Boy. Hopefully you have a fenced in yard you can take him outside to. Give us some details, and we'll see if we can give some more appropriate advice.

I can only answer some of your questions now..but will get more info. I have beentold he is housetrained etc,and is presumably used to using the floor pads to do his business....but,so far,he has not used it..or,indeed,gone anywhere else. He HAS eaten and drunk water plus eaten some small biscuits. He gets up and has a short wander round, but spends most of his time laying on the floor or in his bed. I would like to take him outside in the garden, but cant get near him to pick him up,as he snaps. He has a cage,so...do I put his bed in it and hope he will be brave enough to get in it...or leave his bed on the carpet?

| getting on well now! Binkie has now settled down quite well ..faster than we hoped for actually!Vet given him the once over and booster jab...and he was an angel. The main worry I have now is to get him to eat the dry food that has been recommended by both vet and local pet store.Do I just leave it on the floor and hope he finally tries it.? Thanks for any help. |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | So sorry that your post went un-answered. Yes to leave the food down, or you could take it up and then place it down 30minutes or 1hour afterwards. You could also try to mix some of his old food in with the new food. Good luck. Let us know how it is going for you two.

| I am just now seeing this post and sorry for the delay in replying. First let me say I am so sorry for the loss of your husband. I too lost my husband four years ago, I know all too well the pain and devastation you must be feeling now. Nothing prepares us for such losses, and grieving is a long, difficult process. I send you hugs, and prayers of comfort. I am happy to hear your little pup is adjusting. I had 2 pups at the time I lost my husband, and got 2 more not long after. My pack of 4 provide a great deal of companionship, fun and entertainment, and bring much needed joy to overcome the sadness. As far as feeding, always transition to new food gradually to not upset their tummies. Pick a high quality kibble, and depending on his appetite, weight, etc., you can either "free feed" leaving it down, or establish feeding times where you put it down and if not finished in a certain time, remove it. I liked having food available all day initially, but once my pups were older I switched to certain meal times so I could tell who was eating how much. It also helps in knowing when they will have to potty (within 1/2 hr. after eating). As gemy mentioned, you can add a tiny bit of diced chicken, or parmesan cheese to the kibble to entice him. Be careful though not to overdo giving him "people food", and be sure to read the list of foods toxic to dogs. I give my pups green beans for treats, even frozen ones, and they love them. I hope you will continue to post questions or comments about your little Binkie, and join in some of the conversations here. There is much information here, and a lot of friendly members who love to chat about anything (but especially Yorkies). Yorkie Talk can be a fun place for you especially considering your recent loss.

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | I am so sorry for the loss of your husband. It is such a shame that this pup is scared and unwilling to even play, it makes me sad. What puppy doesn't want to play and have fun. But I am sure that with some time and regular efforts from you that Binky will become the little companion pup he was intended to be. Treats are always a good way to win over a pups heart but I hear that cubed chicken or cooked carrots would work much better. You can reward him for any inkling of warmth, show of affection or any kind of interaction with you. Even if he sits close to you or allows you to get close to him. When he's not looking try leaving a trail of tiny treats leading to you sitting on the floor and see how he does. Im sure at this point your willing to try anything.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I am very sorry to read about the loss of your husband. I will pray for upcoming days of strength and peace for you. How is you new baby doing now? I do so hope he is starting to settle in some as you get to know one another. My pup is 6 months old and was having a few off days last week. Nothing I fed him he would eat. Then I remembered reading a post on here about sprinkling parmasean cheese on their food. So that's what I did and added a few drops of warm water. He lapped it up. I did this for 3 meals straight and now he is back to eating his normal food. Just thought I would share that with you. It's worth a try if nothing else has worked yet. Welcome to YT! I do hope you will stick around. It is a great community so full of great people who have at least thing in common...all things yorkie!

| Hello welcome to YT and sorry for your loss. I would say continue to be loving and patient. The growling/snapping could be a fear response and will go away when he becomes more settled. On the other hand it could be related to previous handling. You will have to work with him to eliminate the fear aggression.

| I hope this gets entered as I tried replying before but it wouldnt get accepted. Binky is wonderful with me and is improving in many respects...other than being very anti-social with any who dare to cross my threshold. He actually turns into a PitBull ! Have employed the services of a dog behaviourist who says it will take a lot of training to get him to the stage of being able to leave him with somebody else whilst I go away. |
