| Litter box training / puppy pad training in apartments successfully?? Help!! DH just got a new job that is causing us to relocate. We are having to move into an apartment building and the only 2 bedroom they have available is an upper unit. I am curious how many of you have done either of these training types successfully? Especially with a dog who is already trained to go outdoors. Also the whole place is carpeted which is giving me slight panic attacks with a new puppy lol. Any tips / tricks would be greatly appreciated. ETA: I have also read about potty patches. which if any have you all had best experiences with?

| I am having potty woes also. But I am reading 7 days to housetrain your dog. It has been very helpful. Although today is the day I plan to implement the crate part, the dogs have been doing much better; simply because I have written down their schedules and then I 've been sticking to an outside time schedule. There is a section in there for dogs going from outside to potty pad. If you have a kindle, Amazon has the ebook for around $5. Good luck. Congratulations on your husband's new job. |

| Have you guys tried that training spray to help them know where to go? I can't remember the one I used but I had good luck with it when training Magnus. Zoey was a lot more stubborn so it took her longer. |

| I put potty pads inside of a litter box (helped from "run off" if they miss). I used a crate to have him sleep in at night then first thing in the morning I would take him to the box and make him stay in there until he went. As soon as he started to go I said "good puppy" and when he was done I had treats near by to give him one. I would also feed him on a schedule, so if your feeding at 8 every morning you know about 8:20 they will probably have to go. I left just a bit of food out all day incase he starting feeling low blood sugar but that didn't seem to affect bathroom habits. Watch them for sniffing and circling, then run them to their pad asap. If they go even go a little bit where they are supposed to give treats and praise- hang in there!

| We just did the same thing....go from a house where he was trained to go outside (he's 8 months) to a second floor apt. Between the frogs and the rain and not wanting to go outside in my PJ's I though I would try getting him to go on pads on the balcony. I will admit I probably gave up too soon, but he wanted no part of it and kept heading for the door to outside. I tried the spray and he just licked it! So I have given up, got my biggest umbrella out and don't care how the neighbors think I look, lol! Since he has the "out?" part down, I didn't want to confuse him by going backwards. Good luck! |

| I am very curious to see if you have had any luck with this. I trained my 9 month old Daisy to go on potty pads in our garage right from the beginning. I also create her while I'm at work and at night. She was doing really well until a month ago. I left her at her groomers for a week while we were out of town. She went into heat while I was gone and every since I brought her home she almost refuses to go to our garage. She wants to go outside it will wait til she's created and then go in it. Today it was well over 12 hours in between her pee times and she hasn't pooped in over 24 hours. I left her in the garage most of the day today while we were outside washing the car so she could be close to us but she just don't go potty. I don't want her going outside. I am at my wits end as my husband doesn't want a house dog and he can't stand it when she goes in our house or her create. Please help me if you can. |

| I have had great luck with the puppy pads! I would keep putting her on it and would put her on it when i saw her sniffing or circling. I also gave her a treat everytime she went. She actually learned really quick

| We have had Winston for one month now. He is 16 weeks old. I wanted to puppy pad train him so got a crate big enough to put his bed on one end and the puppy pad on the other. Kind of like the Puppy Apartment idea. It has two doors so he can go in and lay down for a nap and also another door so he can go to the bathroom. He now goes on demand after I lock him in for a bit and tell him make peeps. He waits for the treats and is praised and cuddled. I just can't get him to go in on his own and potty. He will go everywhere else but inside his potty spot. It is so hard to catch him in the act as you can't see him squat down to do it. I really am trying to be patient and am happy that he goes when I ask him. I am just getting a little discouraged that he won't go on his own once in a while. I think he may have done that twice in a month. I don't know what else to try. I am wondering if I made a mistake training him like this and not taking him outside. We travel in the winter out of the country and I didn't want to take him outdoors to potty so thought this would be a good way to train him. I also have a concrete patio area with a pool and hate the smell of urine in the summer when it gets hot so thought again this would be a good idea. I am so tired of reading but keep coming back to see if I missed anything. Should I keep doing this the same way? Or should I take the puppy pad out of his crate and leave it on the floor in front of it or in another spot. Problem is in another spot I can't keep him confined there to go. |

| I am thinking of doing potty pad as well. I also thought about doing litter box training as just scooping and throwing away the pee or poop was the most appealing part. Of course I would like for my dog to be comfortable to eliminate outside as well on occasions in which we are outside. Which I doubt will be a problem. I thought a little harder about the litter box training method and when my pups hair gets longer like show quality. I prefer to not have to worry about excess dirt and mess in her coat. So just something to think about. As far as your dog going onto the edge. One thing that I thought about doing is just getting a little litter box pan and putting the pads inside of that. Which will help with that problem. As I also liked the idea of washable pads. Which I have found at doggie pee pads. com with a reasonable price tag. Hope these suggestions help. It is a process but from my experience consistency is truly key.! Good Luck to all.!!!! |
