| He won't use pee pads anymore I've had Bentley for 2 months now who came to me pad trained. He is almost 7 months old now and in the past two weeks, he has been pottying on my floors and carpet even though the pad is out and has been in the same spot it has always been. The accidents are few and far between, though. In the past 2 wks, he's done it about 5 times on my floors/carpets and if I see him in the act, I say NO, firmly and I take him immediately to the pad, but, then he doesn't do anything. I decided to have the vet check him out and no issues were found, so what could be happening? My other dogs are trained for outside potty. I do let him go outside with them every now and then. Could this be confusing him? Should I just go strictly outside pottying now? I'm at a loss. Thoughts? |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I originally trained my first Yorkshire terrier to go potty on potty pads. He did really well with the potty pads for the while that I had him, but at a certain point I started confusing him with going potty outdoors. After I made that mistake he started going everywhere. Potty pads teach dogs that it is okay to potty in the house. So eventually when I started switching around his potty to outside he got really confused. The best choice for me was to start taking his potty pads outside and teach him to only potty outside. Eventually, he only started going outside. I know that isn't really great advice, but that is what I did. =) |

Did you leave the pad outside or did you take it with you every time you took your pup out?

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I think the other dogs are confusing him, I would allow him to go outside with the other dogs all of the time. I actually think potty pads are great aids for the human, but if you are taking your other dogs outside, there's no reason he can't be included. I really believe that dogs like to feel part of the pack. By the way, are you sure this is peeing and not marking? Dogs do start marking around that age if not neutered.

YT 500 Club Member | The same thing happened to Honey she did good the first couple of months then all of a sudden started peeing and pooping on the floor. After that I couldnt get her to use them anymore so I had to start taking her outside and she is doing great. Good Luck on what you decide to do. |

| ok...I just took him out the crate, rang the bell and then straight outside. As he was pottying, I repeated the word potty over and over until he was done, as I want him to be able to potty on command as my others do. I then praised and treated him and then we came back inside. If this isn't correct, please let me know. Thanks and good luck to us!! LOL |

I took a recently used pee pad and rubbed it all over the spot in the yard that I wanted him to pee in. I don't know if it worked or if it was just coincidental but Clyde actually started peeing in that general area.

I wrote that message wrong. What I meant to say was that I didn't take the potty pad with me, but the VERY first time that I went outside with Clyde to teach him where to pee. I left the potty pod outside in the area I wanted Clyde to pee in and I took him out there all day long and praised him when he peed in that spot and said things like "go potty" (very similar to the advice other people had given). But after the very first day I COMPLETELY removed the potty pad from the routine. Before I threw the potty pad away I had the crazy and random idea to rub the potty pad in the area that I wanted Clyde to go potty in. That way the next time I took Clyde out to go potty he could still smell everything and relate it to the bathroom but the physical potty pad was removed from the situation .... I don't know if the rubbing of the potty pad on the ground actually worked or not or if it was all just coincidental ... but Clyde started to understand where I wanted him to go potty at ... and that was all that I wanted! So hopefully maybe something like that would work for you! Good Luck!
