| Snappy yorkie My yorkie Keira is a sweet as can be.. but if she is lying in my lap and i touch her back foot or a hair near her rear or if my leg, foot or hand is under her and i move it she jumps up growling and tries to grab my hand.. usually she doesn't really bite just snapping.. i guess to try to scare? but every once in awhile she will bite and i was wondering if anyone has any advice for how to break her from this. i have tried scolding her when she does it but she just seems to get madder when i do that! she never did this when she was younger.. she is almost 10 months old and i didn't notice her doing this until maybe 2 months or so ago? i had her spayed in october and i don't remember her doing it before and if she did it definitely wasn't this bad. sometimes when we are lying on the couch she will jump up growling several times.. i don't know how she gets any sleep.. and the weird thing is she doesn't do this in bed.. only on the couch? sometimes after she jumps up she will move and then just get right back in the same spot. i tried to just touch her back legs and condition her into being used to me touching them but if she isn't lying asleep she doesn't react the same. the only other time that she acts like this is when i cam combing or brushing her and i snag a piece of hair.. she will try to bite the comb. any advice would be greatly appreciated! thanks! i am new to yorkietalk and accidentally posted this under the wrong topic.. how do i get that thread deleted?

| My male is 15 years old and wakes up teeth first since he was 5 years old. I feared he would have a heart attack as I tried to ease him out of that behavior, so I just make sure he's awake before I touch him or pick him up when he's asleep, and I just remain calm and talk gently to him until he regains his composure. Something like, 'Oh my! You want to bite your Mommie? Oh my goodness!' ad nauseum till he realizes the error of his ways and licks my hand instead. Time and Patience.

| Since she's only been doing this for a couple of months, and you had her spayed in October, are you positive there's nothing still sore or that didn't heal properly? If not, then you need to break her of this asap, while she is young. When she bites at you, simply say "NO", pick her up gently and put her on the floor. Repeat calmly and firmly as often as necessary - she will catch on.

| she will let me touch her belly all i want.. she loves to get it rubbed and i have actually felt all over her belly to make sure that she isn't sore. i think it is just some weird behavior she has developed. i will try just saying "NO" and sitting her down and see if that works. i don't intentionally touch her.. it's mostly just when i move while she is lying on me asleep, even if i just adjust myself or am talking with my hands and my elbow touches the hair near her rear.. usually she just jumps up in the air and growls then goes right back to the same spot to lie down.. but sometimes she will bite me. i have tried touching her then petting her and telling her good girl when she didn't growl but i don't really see any improvement so far. but i will keep trying! thank you both for your advice!

| My first thought was that something is hurting her in this area ??? I think I would have your vet check it out just to be sure. Either way, I hope it can be resolved easily.

| I am thinking the same thing, maybe she has a bobo there or something is bothering her. If it's just a bad behavior, squirting the water bottle at Pita helped break her of some bad habits. |

| My dads JRT mix is very very moody like this. Never been able to fix it but we also haven't worked very hard on it either. If she's not in the mood, she will growl and show her teeth. She's never bit but she looks so nasty. Basically, she can just be a nasty little thing and we tell her to "GIVE KISSES!" and she starts licking you. For a while, whenever she would growl, we would put her on the floor. She seemed to learn growling = getting moved out of my sleeping position. But she's back to her old ways. We don't purposely bug her while she's sleeping, but a person should be able to sit next to their dog, or accidentally touch him without getting teeth or growling. It sucks.

| My little Farley is the same way toward my other dogs, they all get along great, but when farley is asleep, he doesnt want any of the dogs near him, sometimes even if they lay near him but dont touch him, he will growl, and if they dont move he gets up and moves somewhere else. UNLESS, he decides to go lay next to someone, lol, then he doesnt care if they are touching. He also at certain times is like this with my husband when im not home, if he tries to move him while he is sleeping. I however can move or touch him at anytime of the day , and he has never ever growled or snapped at me. I know we have to give them their space, but i also think its important to not let them get away with this kind of behavior. Cause i dont want it to get to the point where he would actually bite hard. |

| Could it possibly what they call Small Dog Syndrome? It sounds like it might be the beginnings of it to me (but I'm definitely no expert). | I would first be suspicious of a minor-ish owie or injury, since it seems to be only in a certain area of her body. Actually, I had a similar thing happen several years ago...not with my Yorkies, but with a stray cat...that showed up, bags and baggage, on my doorstep. The vet found an abscess on his leg which was not even visible, lanced it, and gave us pills for infection reduction and control. After the abscess healed, Frosty became the sweetest, most cuddly baby, even with my toddler granddaughter whom he 'adopted' her...she totally became 'his' and he would let no one mess with her and nothing happen to her. It was adorable !!! ;-) If the vet gives your fur baby a clean bill of health...no injuries...no sore spots, etc., and you truly believe it is behavioral, you might try re-training her away from the behavior like other dogs would teach her to respect them...rather than the way a human would normally train...with 'reward' systems, etc. Good luck. - Cat |

| keira probably does have small dog syndrome.. she thinks she is the shiz here at our house. lol it's hard to break her from this because it's not something she does all the time.. and sometimes when she does it i'm not even paying attention lol.. so i forget to tell her "no" but i am definitely going to try.. i don't want her to get worse!!
