| Potty Training: Indoor and Outdoor - am I confusing my pup?! When we first got Lola, we were all for pad training. It was going well minus the occasional accidnet of peeing on the rug. She was always goign to her pad for #2. We got her at 3 months old. Did this for a good month. I started to think it would be good for her to get outside a few times a day to see if she would go. She did, and i was happy. SO i started to take her out when she woke up, she would pee and poop. Good girl. Weekdays i leave her in our kitchen and front hallway area which is blocked off by her play pen with one end open and one closed. She has two pads on trays that during the day she uses when needed...when we get home there is always pee pee on them. no where else. When my fiance gets home he takes her outside; she goes pee pee and sometimes #2. Rest of the night we will take her out a few more times and once before bed. On weekends she is always with me and i take her out non stop, usually dont let her rely on the pad. MY QUESTION IS THIS: am i confusing her by doing both? she i leave no pad during the dya when i am gone for a good 8 hours? is she going to be confused? i would like to haev her always go outside but i dont think she can hold it all day while we are gone if she is not in the crate (and i want to give her some freedom in her current set up to be able to go if needed) help |

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | I dont think you are confusing her at all. You are doing it the correct way. Myself I used newspapers (much cheeper) than the pee pads. One thing that may be helpful is to always use the same door in and out for pee time and have her pads close to that same door. That way she learns that that is the door she needs to go to for potty time. Eventually, the older she gets (bigger her bladder) gets she will be able to hold it in for the full 8 hours. But that is a long way off. Mine were completely potty trained (No accident) at 6-8 months old but I am also home with them all day. If you keep doing what you are doing she should do very well and should be totally potty trained for outside use only within the next 5-6 months. As long as you are consistent.

thanks for the reply. good news is we only have one door out of the apt. we live in a two floor duplex in an apartment complex. i notice when she sniffs around and i ask her "go outside? lola gotta go outside?" she will jump around and knows to come with me to the door and waits for me to put her leash on. she is catching on. she always goes to teh same areas to pee and #2 and i always praise her when she does. having her go outside, it just assures me that i can then let her wander around when we do come back in the house, knowing she wont pee or mark anywehre. otherwise, with the pads, i had to constantly worry about catchign her in the moment. it also gives us some bonding time outside i just wasnt sure fi the pads were confusing her while she is home alone.

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | You are welcome.... sounds like she is doing very well. One thing you might also think about doing is to call her to you than ask her if she needs to go potty or outside. That way when she does need to go (occ. you wont always see her go to the door) she knows to come get you anywhere in the house to let you know she needs to go. It works really very well.

| I don't think so. Riley does both. I leave one of the second nature doggie litter boxes in a corner with peepee pads in it, just in case he needs to go during the day, when I am not home. I bought a diaper genie for the used pads...so there is no smell. I am in the very back/corner up on the 5th floor of a building in DC. He usually holds it all day anyway and when I get home I take him right outside. |

i do this as well, i feel like i am always taking her outside "just in case" but she usually will do a little pee pee even if she doesnt have to go that bad. id rather her go out constantly in the beginning to never have to catch her in the act when i can at leaast

| Sounds like Lola does the same thing Moses does! He goes outside when we are home. I don't know if he would know what to do if we had a pad down all of the time. He knows that when we are home, he barks to tell us it's potty time. If we leave for a short time (3 hours or less), we put him out before we leave, then he has free reign of the house. On the days he doesn't go to day care, he is gated with two potty pads, which he uses only if he really needs to. There are days when he holds it, too! You are doing a good job, Mom!

| My boys are trained for both pads and outdoors. They prefer to go outdoors. If I take them to a store or another home, they know they have to go outdoors to potty. In my opinion, it is better not to make a dog go 8 hours without a potty break (except overnight if they are sleeping). It is better for the kidneys and health in general to drink water and eliminate often. (same for humans)

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I wish both worked for us.. I tried.. but my Taycie was associating her soft pad with her blankets so she started to go potty on her blankets. I had to get rid of the pads. But I still needed a solution during the day sometimes because I couldn't make her hold it. So I made a potty box! I bought a under the bed storage container, some soil, and sod and tada! I had a potty box! I have to replace the sod every 5 months or so, because eventually the urine kills it.. but I can't complain.. it is like 3 bucks for sod. I just take it outside when I am not using it and when I do need it I bring it in! She uses it when I am gone and I love it. Other then that she always goes outside.

| Home Depot, Lowes, nurseries. The last one might be your best bet this time of year.

No Longer a Member | You know they sell something "similar" online for $250 for some grass and plastic. I never thought about using a rubbermaid tub, but it's the perfect size for a yorkie |
