| One trainer showed me by sitting on the floor with her legs out.... She had the puppy on the outside of her right leg..... [with Leg Straight out but Slightly Bent....] she put the treat on the inside part of the leg, and coaxed the pup so that the puppy had to go under the raised knee to get the treat.... When he started doing that she would say down and push him down by straightening the knee. Hope that makes sense...... |

| if the above doesn't work, i've just been physically laying him down by grabbing his body and laying him on his side to where his back half is on its side but his paws are still flat on the floor facing me. or i just grab both his hing legs and lay them down to one side... i've just started teaching this one a few times last night and hes already starting to get it. |

| Another method: Have the dog sit on a couch facing the edge of the couch. Hold the treat close to the dog's nose and slowly move the treat downward, below the couch so that the dog ends up flat on his belly to look over the edge. Then mark the position with "down" and give the dog the treat.

| I read to slowly bring the treat down in front or have her sit then slide her legs out to make her lay, but neither worked for us. When I try to grab her legs she backs up. The couch idea would've been great to know. I looked up other ways & had to just catch her every time she laid down saying "down" "good girl" repeatedly, giving the hand signal & even treating her. It did take longer than any other command but she did catch on.

| The way we learned was to hold a treat in our fingers and put in front of the dog and motion to the floor. The dog will more than likely follow the treat. It kinda helps if the dog is in a sit position. Hold the treat until the dog is all the way down and then say down and treat. the next thing after lay is crawl. You should have a treat that can be nibbled--as the dog is in the down position, slowly pull the treat away and the dog will more than likely follow it crawling. If he tries to stand up...just gently put your hand on his back to keep him lowered. Once he crawls, even it's just one paw in front, say "crawl" and treat. Good luck.

| I taught Teddie lay down as soon as he learned sit perfectly. I'd tell him to sit, would hold the treat in my hand and tell him lie down while touching the floor. He learned to lie down. Then I worked on him laying down without my pointing to the floor in front of him. He got it after a bit of head cocks and ears up episodes. It was definitely one of the tougher one's for him to do without hopping up and doing it over and over. Good luck.

| I always teach sit first, the hand signal that I use is "pointing at the dog while saing sit". I then put a treat in the palm of my hand and hold it with my thumb. I turn my hand over and say "down" while moving my hand towards the floor. Sometime my hand end up flat on the floor, but they get it. I do like the couch idea, might add that to the lessons. |

| Wow...Moses learned it just from me patting the floor and telling him to lay. So his spiel is to sit, shake, speak and lay....he does it faultlessly! |

| In our class, we taught our pups to go into a down from a sit first. After they mastered the sit command and their bottom was on the floor, we put a treat on the floor out in front of them a bit. As they would stretch out to get the treat, keeping their bottoms down, they would drop their front into a laying position. I hope that all makes sense |
