In our class, we taught our pups to go into a down from a sit first. After they mastered the sit command and their bottom was on the floor, we put a treat on the floor out in front of them a bit. As they would stretch out to get the treat, keeping their bottoms down, they would drop their front into a laying position. I hope that all makes sense
